SPBASA is happy to announce that Ronald MacKenzie has joined the Executive Committee as Music Officer.

Ronald started Highland Dancing in as a Sapito in 1979. He began drumming in the band in 1986, and switched to piping in 1990, soon rising through the ranks. He became the band's Pipe Major from 1998 to 2003, and again from 2023 to the present, having been Pipe Sergeant before and in between.

In 2024 he competed in the World Pipe Band Championships with the Pan-European Cross Borders Pipe Band, under Pipe Major Björn Heuckeroth, finishing in 3rd place in Grade 3B.

Ronald has also competed as a soloist in many South American competitions, winning both the Shamrock Cup (Montevideo, Uruguay) and the SAPA Cup (Buenos Aires, Argentina),on separate occasions, as well as multiple top placings in the south American Remote Solo Competitions. In 2025 he won the overall Grade 3 CLASP, organized by the National Piping Centre (Glasgow, Scotland).

This year's online competition of the Competition League for Amateur Solo Pipers (CLASP) took place on 31 October 31 and 1 November, and was judged by Douglas Murray, Sarah Muir, John Dew, Steven Leask and Logan Tannock.

Overall Winners:
Grade 1 – Brady Webb
Grade 2 – Jacob Bowers
Grade 3 – Ronald MacKenzie
Grade 4 – Maureen Moore

At the 2025 Annual General Meeting held on St. Andrew’s Day, Richard Empson was re-elected as the Association's President, and the Executive Committee will remain mostly unchanged for the 2026-2027 period, with Cristiano Bicudo as Vice-President, Alberto Oviedo as Secretary and José Candeias as Marketing Officer. The one change will be Ronald MacKenzie replacing Freddy Santana MacKinley as Music Officer.

Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to commemorate the end of the First World War and to honour those who have served in armed conflicts. Originally called Armistice Day, the date marks the cessation of hostilities that came into effect at 11 a.m. on that day in 1918. It is a day of remembrance in many countries, during which a minute’s silence is observed and poppies are worn as a symbol.

It came, it happened, it went. The 10th South American Pipe Band Gathering was greatly enjoyed by all. Congratulations to all participating bands, and especially to Highland Thistle Pipe Band, for organising a great gathering and for winning every competition accross the board.

Bagpipes have a long history that spans many ages and regions. It is an instrument that has weathered the test of time and deserves to be honored 😃

Today we celebrate International Scotch Day, a day to recognize the history, craftsmanship, and tradition of Scottish whisky. A day to drink your favorite Scotch whisky, whether neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail. A day to try different types of Scotch, be they single malts or blends, to discover new flavors. If in Scotland, a day to visit a distillery or whisky to learn about the whisky-making process. In a nutshell, a day to enjoy the gift that is whisky 😎🥃

Tonight we celebrate the life and legacy of Robert Burns, Scotland's poet extraordinaire. Rabbie, as he was known, is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is the best known poet to have written in the Scots language.

The first supper held in memoriam of him was at Burns Cottage in Ayrshire by Burns' friends, in 1801, on the fifth anniversary of his death; it has been a regular occurrence ever since. The first Burns supper held on his birthday was in January 1802. Since then, Burns Night celebrations have been held on or about the 25th January of every year.
