Fire fighters put their lives on the line every day, and the dangers don’t end when the fire is out. Research continues to show that repeated exposure to toxins on the job can significantly increase the risk of Parkinson’s Disease among fire fighters.
Senator Jim Banks and Senator Andy Kim have introduced the bipartisan Parkinson’s Protection for Firefighters Act to recognize Parkinson’s Disease as a job related illness for federal fire fighters.
Backed by the International Association of Fire Fighters, the bill would help fire fighters get quicker access to medical benefits, reduce red tape, and ease the financial and emotional strain on families while members focus on treatment and recovery.
Indiana has been one of the leaders in recognizing Parkinson’s as a presumptive illness for fire fighters, and this legislation is another step toward protecting those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
