Still feeling the magic from the High Desert Collection. 💗

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us and the space with so much love.

Watching the castees see their completed casts for the first time, often with the artists by their sides, made the night especially meaningful.

Today’s the day, and our final castee spotlight is Shawna whose story with Keep A Breast began in 2024, just one week before her bilateral mastectomies.

Shawna returned to be cast again in 2026, following reconstruction surgery and while still learning to accept her new body. Surrounded by the same warmth and support she found the first time, she felt safe, seen and celebrated.

After chemotherapy, radiation, multiple surgeries and a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, Shawna’s story is one of healing in motion:
“I’m still healing. I’m still growing. Most importantly, I’m still here to tell my story, and I have so much life left to live.”

Tonight, these stories finally come together at the opening reception of our High Desert Collection.

For Reiko, the Keep A Breast castings are a reminder that every body has a story worth honoring.

What could have felt vulnerable instead became comfortable, fun and empowering—more like spending time with friends than posing for a cast.

“I’m incredibly grateful to be part of such a meaningful project and proud to stand alongside so many inspiring women in celebrating breast health, self-love, and the power of community.”

At first, Angela decided the casting process wasn’t for her. Later, she realized she was right—it was for her mum.

Diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer at 60, Angela’s mother endured surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and two mastectomies. Participating became Angela’s way of honoring her strength and the five additional years they were fortunate to share.

“I left feeling grateful, proud, and honored to celebrate my beautiful mum and carry a small part of her story forward.”

Years ago, artist Kime Buzzelli painted a cast for Keep A Breast. Returning to the project, this time as a castee, brought the experience full circle.

Her reason for participating is deeply personal: Kime’s mother has faced breast cancer twice. The first time, she scheduled a mammogram only because a close friend with Stage 4 breast cancer urged her to go.

“That simple act of encouragement quite literally saved my mom’s life.”

For Kime, the project honors the people she loves, including her late friend and fellow High Desert artist, Joanna, while celebrating early detection, creativity and community care.

For Alea Bone, art has always been her first language.

Saying yes to creating a cast in honor of friends affected by breast cancer came easily. Saying yes to being cast herself raised more complicated questions: Why me? How is my body relevant? Is it appropriate for me to take up this space?

Alea’s discomfort became part of the experience, pushing her to think more deeply about her body, her place in the project and the gravity of what so many people she loves have experienced.

“Cancer is f***ed up. Art gives me a way to respond.”

Next Friday, September 18, we come together to celebrate a living archive of the community members, artists and stories that shape California’s High Desert.

Each artist was invited to transform a plaster cast of a community member’s chest into an original work of art. The Collection brings together experiences of identity, place, and connection in this place we call home.

Meet Blair, local business owner one of the castees of the High Desert Collection. 💗

For Blair, the casting process felt almost ritualistic. As the cool plaster hardened around her body, it began to resemble armor: strong, protective and even a little invincible.

“I said yes because I didn’t want to let another meaningful experience pass me by. Supporting breast health is deeply important, but so is saying yes to moments that connect us to ourselves and to one another.”

What surprised her most was how quickly a group of strangers became a community—sharing laughter, encouragement and vulnerability in less than an hour.
