Today we’re celebrating an American icon and 82 years of a message that remains incredibly important to our desert communities: wildfire prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

This photo takes us back to the installation of the fire warning sign along Highway 62 in the Morongo Basin — one of the many ways we work to keep wildfire awareness visible and top of mind for residents and visitors alike.

In a region where wildfire is a year-round concern, Smokey’s message continues to matter just as much today as it did when he first appeared in 1944.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT 🚩

Beginning this evening at 5 PM, hot temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds, and the potential for dry lightning may create conditions that support rapid fire spread. Elevated fire weather conditions are expected to continue through 11 AM Wednesday.

Impacted areas include communities throughout San Bernardino, Inyo, and Mono counties, including portions of the Inland Empire, the San Bernardino National Forest, Joshua Tree National Park, the Mojave Desert, the Owens Valley, the Eastern Sierra, and surrounding mountain and desert communities.

In partnership with Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative, Desert Region Fire Safe will be out at the Positional Projects Clean Up at Giant Rock on Saturday, May 30 from 8AM–1PM with our OHV Fire Safety Program. 🔥🏜️

We’ll be providing FREE:
• OHV fire extinguishers installed on-site
• Tow chain covers
• First aid kits

OHV must be present to receive items.

Gear up to ride responsibly while helping protect our public lands from wildfire risk.

Fire doesn’t need much to take everything.

After the Skyline Fire in Yucca Valley burned 39 acres and destroyed multiple structures, the reality hit close to home for a lot of people. 

Some properties made it. Some didn’t.
The difference? Preparation.

“Zone Zero” — the first 0–5 feet around your home — is where homes are won or lost. Clear it, maintain it, own it. 

Out here, defensible space isn’t optional. It’s survival.

Unusual heat this March is a reminder that fire season can start earlier than we expect in the desert.

After a wet winter, vegetation is beginning to dry out. Combined with higher temperatures, this can quickly increase wildfire danger across our communities.

Please take extra care in the coming days.
Stay hydrated. Avoid sparks. Be fire aware.
