31 police officers patrol our township’s 25 square miles, responding to more than 20,000 calls for service each year — that’s over 55 calls a day, protecting 36,500 residents, homes, schools, and businesses.
Those calls range from serious emergencies to the small but important moments that keep a community running: welfare checks, fights, thefts, crashes, overdoses, mental health crises, and even animal complaints.
Behind each of those responses is a dispatcher, the calm and steady voice gathering vital information and ensuring help arrives quickly and safely.
Right now, our department is operating with the lowest staffing levels in more than 30 years, down from 43 officers in the past to 31 today, with several positions still unfilled. Each vacancy means fewer patrols, longer response and investigation times, and more mandatory overtime for the officers who remain.
A visible police presence — trained officers in marked cruisers — is one of the strongest deterrents to crime. But that presence depends on a full team: dispatchers, records staff, investigators, and patrol officers all working together 24/7 to keep Austintown safe.
The upcoming 5-year Austintown Police Levy is an investment in that readiness, in the people and resources needed to respond when you call, no matter what kind of call it is.
We don’t want Austintown to become a place where residents wait hours for help or stop expecting anyone to come at all. That’s not who we are, and it’s not the standard this community deserves.
Whether you vote Yes or No, please take time to understand what this levy truly means — for your safety, your neighbors, and your police department.
