Rabbiteers 4-H Club Westchester, NY

Rabbiteers 4-H Club Westchester, NY The Rabbiteers are a group that focuses on Rabbits and Guinea Pigs. We teach the children how to handle and properly raise their animals. Located in NY.

The Rabbiteers have been around for a very long time in Westchester county. For a long time we were known as the Sunny Bunnies. In recent years we have changed that to the Rabbiteers.
4-H age ranges from 5-19. You have clover buds which are 5-8 and then Youth 4-her’s 9-19. The Rabbiteers are a group that tends to focus on Rabbits and Guinea Pigs. We do also include other cavy animals like hamste

rs and gerbils. We teach the children how to handle and properly raise their animals from the food they eat to how big their cage should be at fully grown. It is not a requirement to have an animal to join. You can join without one and learn about the breeds and pick one that is well suited for you. We also teach them how to show their animal, so if they choose to go to an event they know how to properly show their animal. Every month the Rabbiteers meet the first 3 Wednesdays for about 1 hour in the 4-H building on the Grange Fair Grounds. Every meeting is different. Some days we might be doing lessons like learns breeds or disease prevention and other days we might be working on handling and showing. There are a variety of Events that go on throughout the year that we take in part of. The 4-h Year is October to September. We do parades and street fairs as well as Earth day at Kensico and our very own Rabbit Day at Muscoot Farm. We also have two big Fairs in which we attend. First is in August the Fair at Muscoot Farm and second is in September the Grange Fair. These Fairs are very important to us because this is where our year's learning pays off where we get to show the public what we do.

We had a great time last night at the Yorktown Reverse Holiday Lights Parade. Even though we stood out there longer than expected it was very cold. We got through and had a great time. We had our own little float this year and it was great.

October Update:

Hi, my name is Ella Eltanikhy! We have learned many things and I will tell you about them! There is a breed called the Peruvian. That is a Guinea pig breed. We studied and learned about where it came from and it's breed standard. Now, we can talk about the rabbits. There is a certain way to hold a rabbit. You should hold a rabbit in a football position, otherwise if you just pick it up from its stomach, you can harm him and he can just jump out of your arms. Another way you can hold a rabbit is if you scoop it up and support its bottom. If you do not support the rabbits bottom, It would be pretty bad because rabbits like to move around, for example my rabbit is very hyper. When you pick them up and don’t support their bottom they could jump out of our arms and get injured. Anyway, that is everything that I have learned at the Rabbiteers club in 3 WEEKS!!
