Soldier’s Circle at Prospect Hill Cemetery

Soldier’s Circle is a historic Soldiers’ Lot within Prospect Hill Cemetery dedicated to the Union soldiers who died in the York area during and following the Civil War. Many of the men buried there died from wounds or illness while being treated at the Civil War hospitals in York. The remains were moved to the present location after the Civil War, and a 15-foot bronze Union soldier monument, designed by sculptor Martin Milmore, was erected in 1874. The names of the known soldiers are inscribed on the two circular granite curbs surrounding the monument.

Although Soldier’s Circle is physically located within Prospect Hill Cemetery, that particular Soldiers’ Lot is federally owned and administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It was given to the federal government after the Civil War as a designated burial place for the soldiers. The VA identifies it as the Prospect Hill Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot, located within Section A, Lot 689 of the larger cemetery.

Why is it part of Wreaths Across America?

The federal status of Soldier’s Circle is an important part of its connection to Wreaths Across America. Wreaths Across America’s mission is to “Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.” Prospect Hill Cemetery participates in the annual Wreaths Across America program to honor veterans buried throughout the cemetery, including the soldiers whose final resting place is Soldier’s Circle.

This makes Soldier’s Circle a particularly meaningful place for the ceremony: it is a federally recognized Soldiers’ Lot within a historic private cemetery, created specifically to honor men who gave their lives in service during the Civil War. Today, remembering these soldiers through Wreaths Across America connects their Civil War-era service with the broader tradition of honoring veterans from every generation.

Twice the honor.

When you sponsor a Patriot Pair, one wreath will be placed on a veteran's headstone at a participation WAA location this December, and a second wreath will be sent to the address of your choice to be displayed as you choose.

It is a great option if you're looking to participate on National Wreaths Across America Day and remember the service of a veteran in your family, honor the sacrifice of a military family you know, or teach others about the Wreaths Across America mission at a business or at home.
