When you think of Japanese samurai, you might picture men. But history tells a more complicated story. Samurai were highly trained warriors who served powerful leaders and lived by a strict code of honor. And evidence from 16th-century battlefield burial sites suggests that 30–50% of those buried were likely women. These findings align with records of the onna-musha, women from samurai families who were trained to use weapons like the naginata and bow, and who fought to defend their communities in times of war.

This just serves as more proof that women didn’t sit idly by waiting to be saved or protected. They were active participants, fighting and defending their communities, too.

This Women’s History Month we celebrate Rosetta Lawson (1875-1936), a trailblazer and suffragette driven by firsthand understanding of the needs of Black women after Reconstruction, worked to create a YWCA that served those excluded by segregation. She made history by establishing the first Phyllis Wheatley Branch of YWCAβ€”an affirming, community built space by and for Black women. Her leadership expanded opportunity and visibility within a segregated system and paved the way for YWCA to become the organization it is today.
