The Yoakum Rotary Club was established on September 24, 1923 when Rotary International issued Charter Number 1515. This was only 18 years after the first Rotary Club was founded in Chicago by Paul Harris. Organization of a Rotary Club in Yoakum came at a time when the town was divided over a political issue. The new club reportedly helped bridge the gap between the two factions. On May 28, 1928 the Hallettsville Rotary Club was chartered with the Yoakum Rotary Club as its sponsor.
The charter directors were Ed. A. Palmer, Emanual Hertz, Carl C. Welhausen, David J. Shall, Mark C. Driscoll, Ludlow D. Buffington, and J. Kilburn Elkins. Over the years, the Yoakum Rotary Club has been involved in many activities. It currently sponsors a Rotaract Club at YHS, the Jamison Center, and distributes “I Like Me” books to the local elementary school, among other projects. It sends local youths to leadership, free enterprise, and other special study camps. Yoakum Rotary also provides several academic and vocational scholarships.
Yoakum Rotary club has an annual Clay Shoot fundraiser, hosted locally. It has grown in participation and funds raised every year that it has been put on.
The Rotary Foundation is involved in a massive polio vaccination program internationally. Since we started the fight against polio, we’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine. There are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but we will not stop until we reach zero.
