Chapter President Justin Grimm had the honor of being the guest judge of the WSU Thurston County 4-H Youth Development Program TCSS 1st annual Youth Turkey Calling Contest at the Thurston County Fairgrounds and Event Center!

All 5 participants are members of the Thurston County Shooting Sports program, an offshoot of our county 4-H. They participated in a calling tutorial seminar put on by Justin earlier this year, and built their own pot calls with the assistance of Justin Spruiell, TCSS program lead and longtime NWTF-Washington supporter.

With the help of "Dinner", a bronze heritage Jake, the 5 contestants were judged on 3 categories:

▪️Realism
▪️Variety
▪️Volume

After their 30 second calling sequences were complete, the scores were tallied. It was very close between the top 2 callers, but ultimately a winner was selected.

Congratulations to Wyatt Tekin, the 2026 Thurston County Fair turkey calling champion!

Wyatt received not only his trophy, but the chapter is awarding him an annual JAKES membership to The National Wild Turkey Federation 🦃

All participants received an NWTF cinch bag with goodies, including an NWTF hat!

Today, the Nisqually River chapter represented NWTF-Washington and The National Wild Turkey Federation by participating in National Gold Star Children's Day at Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife South Puget Sound Wildlife Area in Lakewood.

Gold Star Children's Day honors the children of fallen service members 🇺🇸🙏🏻

Along with BHA -Armed Forces Initiative - Washington, Heroes On the Water NWest Chapter, Pacific Harbors Council, Scouting America Troop 53, USO Northwest and other partners, we created a fun afternoon for over 20 Gold Star Children.

The kids and families were able to learn about our organization, play with turkey calls, take part in a mock turkey hunt in a ground blind, and receive their first turkeys! (Of the 3D printed variety courtesy of Bravo Zulu Engraving)

INSIDE SCOOP: There will be a virtual meeting hosted by WDFW on August 17th to review the proposed changes to Wild Turkey management and seasons at 6pm. I recommend everyone who loves the Wild Turkey in Washington attend.
