Congratulations to Alexandra LaBerge on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award—the highest achievement in Girl Scouting!

What is your project about?
I gave a presentation on the importance of mental health and what it is to Wrentham, Plainville, and Norfolk elementary schools. They also got to do an activity where they drew the things that are closest to their heart. I think it’s important that kids know what mental health is, and how to take care of it. Also, they know how to keep the things that bring them joy closest to them. This is why I did my project. I think this topic is so necessary to be talked about, especially starting at a young age.

What is your favorite aspect of being a Girl Scout?
My favorite aspect of being a Girl Scout is getting the opportunity to mentor younger girls. Nothing makes me happier than getting to be a good example for them and making sure they’re having a good time. My favorite part of the year is SPARK. I love getting to run stations to help educate the girls on camp skills, and to get to teach them how to cook. Watching them have a good time, and getting to be a part of their happiness is special.

Congratulations to Kate LaPlaca on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award—the highest achievement in Girl Scouting!

What is your project about?
For my Gold Award project, I worked with the Wrentham Food Pantry. I love to cook and bake, so I created a recipe book using foods commonly available at the food pantry. I compiled recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and dessert ideas, while keeping in mind that the recipes should be healthy, easy to prepare, use simple ingredients, family-friendly, and cost-effective. I named the cookbook "Cheap and Easy Meals". I put together the ingredients for one of the recipes, Overnight Oats, in a large mason jar. I also incorporated my love of art and pottery into this project by making 35 handmade painted pottery bowls. I presented the cookbook, overnight oats jar, and pottery bowl in a gift bag. These were handed out at the weekly food pantry pickup. I received several notes and emails from people who received these gift bags, and it felt good to know that I brought some happiness (and healthy food) to people in my community through my Gold Award Project.

How will being a Gold Award Girl Scout effect the rest of your life?
Being a Gold Award Girl Scout will impact me for the rest of my life in so many ways. Knowing that only a small percentage of Girl Scouts achieve this highest award feels amazing. Our service unit hasn't had a Gold Award Girl Scout in many years. The pride of knowing that I achieved this honor will encourage me to have the perseverance and confidence to achieve many more difficult things in my future. It allowed me to complete an independent project that I was in charge of, knowing I had the support of my leaders and mentors, but, ultimately, knowing that the project was my responsibility. It also opened my eyes to realize that there are people in my community whom I was able to impact and help through my Gold Award project. Hearing that my project brought a smile to someone's face, brightened their day, gave them some good meal ideas, and encouraged them to cook something new, made me realize that everyone can take action to make an impact on someone else.
