The Green Pond Rural Alliance (GPRA) is launching a plan to stop urban sprawl in the Ferguson Creek Watershed. They want to help neighbors protect their land from overdevelopment.
The Problem: Spartanburg County is growing faster than ever. While some areas have strong zoning rules (the PZO), most of the county uses older rules (the ULMO) that allow industrial plants and dense subdivisions to be built right next to farms and homes.
The Solution: "Rural & Agricultural Overlay Districts": The GPRA is encouraging landowners to apply for a special protection called a Rural & Agricultural Overlay District.
● 50% Green Space: If a developer buys land in this district, they must keep at least 50% of it as open green space.
● Better Protection: This prevents heavy industrial projects (like chemical plants) from moving in next door.
● Smart Growth: It pushes big businesses toward major highways and away from quiet rural neighborhoods.
How You Can Help: The County Council may soon change these rules in a way that favors developers. The GPRA needs community support to show that residents want to preserve their rural way of life.
