A BIT OF OUR HISTORY
The Portuguese were the first to trade with China in 1513, and opened Japan to the world in 1570. Men like Dias, de Gama, Cabral, Albuquereque, Magellan and other Portuguese seaman braved seas no European had sailed before to reach the Indies, the Spice Islands, Japan and China. On September 28, 1542 João Rodrigues Cabrilho (anglicized to John Rodrigues Cabrillo), a Portug

uese navigator sailing under the flag of Spain guided his flagship San Salvador into “a very good enclosed port” which he named San Miguel today known as San Diego. Cabrillo was the first European to set foot on the West Coast of what became the United States of America. In 1934, a group of dedicated men from San Francisco provided a way for the name Cabrillo to be recognized in California history and not be forgotten. These men recognized that Cabrillo was Portuguese and that they were of the same ancestry that glorified the world with its discoveries.
