Congratulations, to Correctional Officer Brian Nickerson who retired from the Yolo County Sheriff's Office on June 1, 2026.

Brian began his career with YCSO on January 31, 2005 as a CO I, and promoted to CO II on January 22, 2006. During his 21 year tenure, Brian has worked for two Sheriffs: Ed G. Prieto and Tom A. Lopez.

Deputy Ruben L. Guerrero, YCSO (Ret.), passed away peacefully at his home in Woodland on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, following a lengthy illness. He was 83 years old.

Ruben graduated from Woodland High School in 1961. Following graduation he served in the 82nd Airborne with the U.S. Army. Ruben was sworn in as a deputy sheriff with the Yolo County Sheriff's Office on November 3, 1969. His assignments included: Detention, Transportation, Court Services, Patrol and Davis Resident Deputy.

Plans for a memorial service / celebration of life are pending at this time.

William "Bill" Colston, former Chief of Police in Woodland, CA, passed away in early March. He was 82 years old. A memorial service was held in his honor on March 13, 2026 in Madera.

Bill graduated from Ventura Senior High School in 1961. His law enforcement career began at just 17 years old.

In the late 1970s, at the age of 34, he became the youngest Chief of Police in Woodland, California. He later went on to serve as Chief of Police in Ventura, and from there, on to Chief of Police in Madera in 1991. He retired from Madera PD in 1997.

Barry Douglas Kalar, former Chief of Police, West Sacramento PD / Chief of Police, Moraga PD (Ret.), passed away Saturday, May 23, 2026, following a lengthy illness. He was 79 years old.

Barry was born and raised in Minnesota and later moved to Montana. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam as a corporal.

After being discharged in 1969, Barry headed to California to pursue an education in Aeronautical Engineering, with a goal of eventually working for NASA. After becoming interested in law enforcement in 1971, he applied for a reserve deputy position. Thus, began his 31 year career in law enforcement, working for the following agencies:

Merced County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant - 8 years

Merced Police Department, Lieutenant - 5 years

Willits Police Department, Chief of Police – 3 years

West Sacramento Police Department, Chief of Police - 1987 to 1993

Moraga Police Department, Chief of Police – 1993 to 2002

In 1978, Barry obtained his BA in Criminal Justice from Chapman University, and then his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Cal State University of Hayward in 1996. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1982.

Following retirement, Barry became an Adjunct Professor in the Administration of Justice Department with the Los Rios Community College District, and taught several classes at Sacramento City College.

A memorial / celebration of life gathering is not planned at this time.

Congratulations, to Sergeant Louis Cameron who retired from West Sacramento PD in May 2026 after 22 years of dedicated service! 'Lou" worked a number of assignments including: Patrol, Investigations and Marine Patrol. His awards include: Officer of the Year and he was a member of the Team of the Year.

His grandfather was James W. Cameron, who served as Sheriff of Yolo County, 1971 - 1979. His father, Clark Cameron, served as a member of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors in the 1970s and 1980s.
