Prince William County Food Council - PWCFC The Prince William County Food Council's mission is to create a sustainable and equitable food system that benefits our community, economy, and environment.

We focus on community-driven solutions and collaboration to enhance our region's food landscape.

According to Capital Area Food Bank's 2026 Hunger Report, Prince William County’s food insecurity rate has increased to 47%. Just three years ago, that number was 36%. Prince William County also continues to have one of the highest food insecurity rates in the DMV, second only to Prince George’s County.

For us at Northern Virginia Food Rescue, these numbers reinforce why our work matters. Every day, we see firsthand the importance of getting good, nutritious food out of the waste stream and into the hands of organizations serving our community.

But food rescue alone cannot solve food insecurity.

These numbers call for collaboration, conversation, and action across our entire food system. That is why we’re looking forward to this week’s Prince William County Food Council - PWCFC meeting and the important discussions that will take place around this report.

We need to understand what is driving these increases, identify the gaps in our current systems, and work together to ensure that people across Prince William County have consistent access to the food they need.

There is a lot to digest in this report, but one thing is clear: we cannot address food insecurity alone. We have to do it together.

WHAT DOES THE 2026 CAFB HUNGER REPORT MEAN FOR PWC?

The latest Capital Area Food Bank Hunger Report gives us more than numbers; it gives us a clearer picture of the challenges facing households across our region.

Here are a few key takeaways:

1️⃣ Food insecurity is an economic issue. Rising costs for food, housing, transportation, healthcare and utilities are stretching household budgets.

2️⃣ Hunger doesn’t have a specific look. Working and middle-income households can struggle to consistently afford food, too.

3️⃣ Access matters. Food being available doesn’t mean everyone can easily access it.

4️⃣ Our safety net matters. As SNAP changes take effect, connecting residents to trusted resources will be increasingly important.

5️⃣ We need to think beyond food distribution. Stronger food security requires collaboration across food access, healthcare, transportation, schools, libraries and other community supports.

The report estimates that 47% of households in PWC experienced food insecurity; making our county the second-highest food insecure locality in the region. The report also identifies PWC as one of the jurisdictions with the most significant increases over the past five years.

For Prince William County, the question is: How do we build a food system that doesn’t just respond to hunger, but helps create the conditions for food security?

📌 The 2026 CAFB Hunger Report will be discussed at our next Prince William County Food Council meeting. Join us to continue the conversation about what these findings mean for PWC, and what we can do to build a stronger community food web.

A big thank you to DC Central Kitchen for hosting yesterday’s DMV Food Council Collaborative meeting!

Their operations are truly impressive, and it was a great opportunity to see their work up close while connecting with fellow food council leaders from across the DMV.

One of the most valuable parts of the meeting was the opportunity to talk openly about how each food council is structured within its jurisdiction, the priorities we’re working toward, and the resources and strategies we can share with one another. While every community has its own unique needs, there is so much common ground in the work we’re doing.

Food insecurity, food access, food waste, local food systems and resiliency don’t stop at jurisdictional boundaries. None of us can tackle these challenges alone. Collaboration allows us to learn from one another, share resources, strengthen our collective impact and identify opportunities to work together rather than duplicating efforts.

We are proud to be part of a network of people who believe that building a stronger, more equitable food system requires all of us at the table.

Thank you again to DC Central Kitchen for welcoming Northern Virginia Food Rescue/ The Prince William County Food Council - PWCFC, and to all of the DMV Food Council Collaborative members for the thoughtful conversation and continued partnership.

📢 SNAP Changes Are Coming — What Does This Mean for Prince William County?

Changes to SNAP are happening this fall, and some PWC households may be affected by new eligibility and work requirements.

We’ve put together this quick overview to help our community understand what’s changing, who may be impacted, and why it matters for our local food system.

Swipe through the flyer, stay informed, and share this information with someone who may need it.

Food security is community security. And food is not a privilege—it’s a right. 💚
