Devoted to PREVENT FLOODING endemic to this area by preserving or assuring responsible flood conscious development of the Spence Farm & other properties located on Wyman St.
We are a small group of neighbors who came together as the planned development of Spence Farm spurred fears of increased flooding that is already horrendous in the area. Since then we have grown to have an active Email distribution list of almost 150 people and a page with over 880 fans that represent families across the city of Woburn. Dozens of people actively participated in civic meetings for months which spurred the idea of a tiny meals tax to enable the purchase of this remaining property (and Whispering Hills). We attended many neighborhood and City Council meetings, circulated petitions, made phone calls, and went door to door engaging community support. By doing so we encouraged the council to approve the funding and purchase. The City Council was extremely wary of any tax (the meals tax was previously soundly defeated) and this one would never have passed without the overwhelming support of the community. That was the wish of the community and the PROMISE of the council with that vote. This property has since become an integral part of the city and an exemplary center for community activity. In addition to its ongoing and regular use as an outdoor recreational area both summer and winter, let us remind the city of some of the many of activities hosted at the farm. In addition to the summer and winter farmers’ markets, several blood drives, shredding events, and many recycling drives, there have been the kids’ fall festivals, kids’ triathlons, Oktoberfest, health & wellness classes, cooking demonstrations, classes in gardening, Christmas tour stop, scout meetings, hay rides, petting corrals, Feeny Five road race, the planting of an entire fruit tree orchard won by overwhelming community support, and many other activities. Please help us keep this property as open space, a protection against flooding, and as a center for community activities.
