Last week someone asked me some questions here on my school board feed and realized my responses to her were not easily viewable, unless you dug down into it. It's located under my ballot order post but for ease of navigation, I've copied them here as a new post as well.
Do you believe the States shared revenue should be increased for our school district?: I believe the current funding system for public schools is broken and needs to be fixed.
Have you ever referred to someone you don’t agree with as being “woke” in a negative connotation? No
Can you define Critical Race Theory, and do you believe it is being taught by Lodi teachers? The Oxford dictionary defines Critical Race Theory as: “A set of ideas holding that racial bias is inherent in many parts of western society, especially in its legal and social institutions, on the basis of their having been primarily designed for and implemented by white people”. Do I believe it is being taught by Lodi teachers? Doubtful, it wasn’t when my kids were in school several years ago. From my understanding, this is a subject that is taught at colleges and universities.
Do you believe teaching SEL is important? I’ll be honest, I’m not familiar with it in its entirety being taught at all grade levels. I believe this is something newer that was implemented after my kids graduated. One of my children had special education services in middle and high school and my child was taught certain parts of SEL, it wasn’t called that at the time though. Reflecting back at my children’s education in the Lodi Schools, I believe there were similar things they were taught similar to SEL, but it wasn’t called SEL specifically and was not at all grade levels. It was mostly at the primary school level and special ed services from what I can remember, not under the current SEL definition and not at all schools/grade levels.
Do you believe any books should be banned from our schools, if so which ones, and why? No
Do you believe in the separation of church and state? I’m not quite sure what you are asking. I believe in following the Constitution.
What is your opinion on our state’s school voucher program? I’m not exactly sure what you are asking. This is something that would be addressed at the state level.
Would you support installing solar panels on our schools to offset utility costs and lower our carbon footprint? Yes
