Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday!

November 2023

Boozhoo,

Warm wishes to all of you. It’s been a beautiful autumn. It’s already November: Gashkadino-Giizis (the month of the Freezing Over Moon). We are writing on behalf of the Gikinoo’amaage Indigenous Educators Coalition to ask for your help again with our work to increase the number of Indigenous educators in the Chequamegon Bay area. As you are aware, a high percentage of students are Indigenous, yet the percentage of those who are teaching lags far behind the student population. Increasing the Indigenous representation in the teaching population will help to promote equity and improve the learning environment for all students.

A Learning Policy Institute study found that having teachers of color in the classroom affects students of color in several ways, including:
Boosting overall academic performance;
Improving reading and math test scores;
Improving graduation rates;
Increasing aspirations to attend college; and
Reducing the number of absences.

Our long range goals include:
Providing scholarship support for Indigenous students pursuing educational careers;
Assisting Indigenous students with ongoing or unanticipated expenses;
Creating a network of educators to provide mentoring to new Indigenous educators;
Holding annual gatherings of educators to meet and share ideas; and
Organizing fundraising and other events that celebrate and share Indigenous culture.

In the past we have been able to award scholarships to two students from Bad River; and we have supported Northland College as they created their 85% scholarship program for Native students.

At this time, please make a donation to help us reach our goals and achieve our mission. If you are able to do so, here is our PayPal link: paypal.me/gikinooamaage. You can also mail checks to:
