🔥 Leecher Lookout Trip — this Saturday, May 30 @ 10 AM

We’ll meet at Blue Star Coffee Roasters to carpool up to Leecher Lookout, a nearly 100‑year‑old fire lookout on Leecher Mountain in the Okanogan National Forest.

Gabriella Cobb from the Forest Service will join us to share her experience in wildland fire and rappelling, and to talk about how fire lookouts were used, who staffed them, and what happens when they’re retired.

We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch inside the lookout and take in the views together.

-Thanks
Den Leader Jessy

This Week’s Cub Scout Meeting – Wednesday 5/18 @ 5:30 PM (MVES)

Cubs, this week we’ll be learning some basic basket‑weaving techniques using natural materials. We’ll practice creating simple planter baskets and talk about how these same skills connect to traditional hunter‑gatherer weaving and survival knowledge.

Homework:
Each Scout needs to bring at least 20 sticks, all moderately similar in size—about 8”-10”inches long. If they’re not perfect, no worries; we can trim them together. Bringing your sticks ahead of time will help us jump right into weaving.

Thanks,
Den Leader Jessy

Round of applause to our wonderful Aero Methow members Derek executive director and manager Ruth. We learned the first objective of swift water rescue “throw” this rescue method uses a standard sequence known as: Reach, Throw, Row, Go. Not to mention some defensive swimming or floating positions to help save your life if you found yourself in a fast moving river.

This week we’re excited to welcome Derek Van Marter, Executive Director of Aero Methow Rescue. He’ll be guiding our Scouts through an introduction to swift‑water rescue awareness, including:

• How fast‑moving snowmelt rivers behave
• Defensive swimming positions
• What to do if you’re unexpectedly swept into current
• Skills that help keep you safe around high water

These are important, practical lessons — not because we expect Scouts to be in these situations, but because knowledge and practice build confidence and prevent emergencies.

Thanks,
Den leader Jessy

Yesterday, we cleaned a mile stretch of road to preserve our land for future generations. We shared conversations about nature, artifacts, forest service signs, plants, mushrooms, and ended with a picnic at Falls Creek, where the creek flows rapidly due to snowmelt. Good job, Cubs!

We had a last-minute switcheroo for our meetup yesterday. Den Leader Jessy's house became our meeting location for the evening. The Scouts took charge, leading themselves on a wild scavenger hunt to better familiarize themselves with the 12 scout laws. They had to put their teamwork skills to the test, with the older first-grade boys reading the definitions while the others searched high and low for the perfect image that best fit the definition. And, of course, we wrapped things up with some delicious s'mores over the fire, courtesy of our friends at KOA.

Our young scouts had a great spring break, participating in various family activities and adventures. They explored ocean critters, went shed hunting, had perfect golfing days, fished in local lakes, practiced hitting badeball wirh dad, and visited Arizona's red rocks. This week, we will assemble at the MVES Cafeteria on April 15th at 5:30 p.m. to create cards promoting positivity and encouragement, which will be displayed throughout our community. We will then take a walk through the trail system behind the high school.
