The Maine Historical Society is stewarding one of 26 surviving copies of the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration, printed in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, and sent to the Colonies to announce American independence. It will be displayed in all 16 counties and is coming to Belfast Free Library August 14&15 (August 13 is fully booked). This copy is normally kept in secure climate-controlled storage and only occasionally displayed publicly. This is a unique chance for you. The entrance is free of charge, but you do need to reserve a time slot.

Only two weeks to go until the Declaration arrives! On August 13, 14, and 15, Maine Historical Society's rare Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration of Independence will be on display at the Belfast Free Library. Hello.
The new membership year of 2026-27 starts in September. We are encouraging you to consider membership. You can choose to be an active volunteer or quietly supportive, either is welcome.

Current annual upkeep/maintenance of the museum is approximately $8,000/year; a membership of 400 is needed to carry the museum, with all its precious contents, far into the future.

We welcome your support at any level — and if you’re able, we’d love for you to consider joining as a WinterGreen member.

According to an 1886 Maine gazetteer, Winterport’s manufactures included cooperage, lumber, cheese and butter, and men’s vests, produced across four separate factories, along with harnesses and other goods. The town was noted as the pioneer town in the state for the manufacture of clothing.

Does anyone out there have any knowledge about these vests, or where we might be able to find one?

July 23rd, tomorrow, the museum will restart with every Tuesday, Thursday, and third Saturday open hours, 12-2.

We need to make some adjustments to the museum hours.
We will resume the Tuesday and Thursday hours on Thursday July 23. We will be open for the third Saturday, July 18, 9-1.
