March 17 marks the 13th anniversary of the Full Profession of the Orlando Sisters, Abbey of St. Gertrude de Nivelles….. but who is Saint Gertrude?
Saint Gertrude de Nivelles or “Gertie” as we call her, was a 7th century Saint who has the unfortunate fate to share her feast day with one of the most renowned of Catholic Saints… Saint Patrick.
The mythical Patrick, his “chasing serpents our of Ireland”, and how it’s all devolved into a binge drinking holiday (particularly in the US) has long overshadowed Saint Gertrude.
Gertie was the daughter of two Saints (Blessed Pepin of Landen and Blessed Itta of Metz) Sister to another (Saint Begga of Ardenne), and is credited with two miracles - one a vision of the Visitation of the True Light and the other was the calming of a storm when a group of sailors invoked her name, fearing they would be lost at sea.
She was devoted to the Church early in life and lived a life of monastic austerity, co-founding a Benedictine monastery with her mother, and serving as its first Abbess (at the age of 20), Gertie lived the rest of her life in the monastery in Nivelles (modern day Belgium).
Saint Gertrude is a patron saint of travelers (perfect for us a city like Orlando, which is sustained by tourists) as well as invoked against rodent infestations (an irony all-too-obvious with a certain corporate mascot). Our distinctive headpieces are in-part inspired by images of her nun’s wimple, which reminds some people of ubiquitous accessory found at a local theme park.
So this weekend, while wearing your “Kiss me I’m Irish” t-shirt and drinking your green beer, take a moment to remember Saint Gertrude de Nivelles, and how she inspired a group of q***r nuns to venture out into the community and spread joy.
And if you see one of us out and about, come say hello, get a little blessing, and know that you are seen, you are heard, you are accepted, and you are LOVED!!
