🌀 Hurricane Melissa – Haiti Situation Report

Overview
Hurricane Melissa, a Category 3 storm at its peak, has caused widespread devastation across southern Haiti. Torrential rains, violent winds, and river overflows have led to significant loss of life and infrastructure damage.

📍 Key Impact Areas
- Southern Departments: Grand’Anse, Nippes, Sud, and Petit-Goâve were hardest hit.
In Petit-Goâve: The La Digue river overflowed, causing deadly flash floods and landslides.

Human Toll
- Deaths:At least 50 confirmed fatalities.
- Missing: Over 20 people unaccounted for.
- Injured: 27 reported injuries
- Displaced: More than 13,900 people are sheltering in 121 temporary facilities.

Infrastructure Damage
- Homes, roads, and bridges have been washed away or severely damaged.
- Power outages and communication disruptions persist in affected zones.

With nearly half the population needing humanitarian aid and 5.6 million facing food insecurity, the scale of suffering is immense. Yet, donors and global institutions are not showing up to maintain funding and attention while enduring daily hardship and global neglect.
