Island CultureZ Aligning Our Potential To Ignite A Culture Of Liberation

On April 11th, we came together on Da Island to build the vision of the community garden at the corner of N Dunleith Ave and 5th St.

We heard what people want to see grown, the collaborations they want Island CultureZ to consider with other organizations, and the importance of food and medicine resiliency, accessibility, and agricultural entrepreneurship. Community members were able to leave with seeds, soil, and full bellies thanks to Antojitos Las Delicias.

Although we did not plant that day, we sowed seeds of what collaboration, food and land sovereignty, and sharing resources could do for a community.

Speaker Highlight for G.R.A.P.H.S Planting Ceremony April 11th:

Taylor Marshall is an urban farmer, grassroots organizer, death worker, fiber artist, educator, and founder of Symbiotic Creations. Through her work in regenerative agriculture, traditional crafts, and herbal medicines, she integrates urban farming, community building, grief and art to promote collective healing, resiliency and a culture rooted in care.

She is also on the board of Island CultureZ whose mission is to align out potential ti ignite a culture of liberation for historically marginalized and redlined communities. One way Taylor is working to achieve this is through establishing an herbal education program at ICZ’s newly established herbal community garden and through establishing an herb processing hub. This will empower people to know how to use medicinal herbs for planetary and human health and gain entrepreneurial skills to improve one’s economic well-being.

Demonstrator highlight for GRAPHS Planting Ceremony April 11th:

Tiffany Williams-Brooks graduated from Winston-Salem State University with her BS in clinical laboratory science. She earned her Master’s of Public Health degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Tiffany is a project manager at Gramercy Research Group where she coordinates and manages multiple projects including the largest chronic disease prevention research study ever conducted that focuses on African-American men. Tiffany began beekeeping as a hobby and became a certified beekeeper with the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association in 2018. With the support of her husband, Derek, this hobby progressed into an entrepreneurial venture known as Miss Humble B’s Hive, LLC. She maintains beehives, processes and sells honey, and educates youth and families about beekeeping with experiential learning opportunities. Tiffany enjoys cooking, spending time with family and friends, and riding her motorcycle.

Speaker Highlight for G.R.A.P.H.S Planting Ceremony April 11th:

Karen Bonner is a clinical and community herbalist, educator, and founder of Sage & Lavender Holistic Collective. Her work is grounded in mentorship based training, plant medicine traditions, and years of study across Appalachian, Afro Indigenous, and global healing practices. She has trained with respected teachers in Chinese medicine and Amazonian traditions, deepening her understanding of the body, spirit, and land as interconnected systems. Karen creates spaces for holistic healing through herbal care, education, and community experiences, including culinary wellness and plant based practices. Her work is rooted in restoring balance, honoring lineage, and guiding others back to their own wisdom.

Speaker Highlight for G.R.A.P.H.S. Planting Ceremony April 11th:

Michael Banner, also known in his nap of the neck as Magneto, is a radically inclined community advocate who is active in the agricultural arts, namely in creating opportunities for food growth in marginalized, disinvested communities or in his words "Da Island". His steadfast undertaking has been invested in East Winston Proper where the makings of a solidarity economy, respectful of the black and brown cultures that are heavy there, with his motivation being sustained through a deep desire to break the yoke of poverty. "Who feeds you, controls you!" is a cardinal truth in his neck of the woods, and with the non-profit that he is the Chief Catalyst for, Island CultureZ; he is about the work of "Aligning Our Potential To Ignite A Culture Of Liberation".

Spring is around the corner and Island CultureZ’ is so excited to host the G.R.A.P.H.S Planting Ceremony! 🌞🌱🎉

This is going to be an amazing time where we will establish a Grass Root Agriculture Pollinator Sanctuary for the healing of people and the planet through community gardening. ✨💚

You will be hearing from board members of Island CultureZ as well as our collaborators Karen Bonner of and Taylor Marshall of !
