The 10th Anniversary Concert by the Shepherd’s Center Singers was phenomenal! Counting the singers, we had 100 folks in attendance. The music was varied and outstanding, and the audience really got into it! The night ended with cake, punch, and fellowship! Meet Ty! Ty "Champions her Health" by volunteering to drive folks to the grocery store and medical appointments. A former Board Member, Ty also calls people to check on them through our "Phone Pals" program. When asked how volunteering for us has helped her grow, she told us, "My belief is that we are put on this earth to help others, so it really does satisfy a need in me to be productive and helpful. I grew up believing that is just what you do. I feel like I need a purpose in my life and volunteering provides me with that. It gives me the opportunity to see how other people live. Working with the SC is very uplifting. I always feel good when I drop in to see the staff." Thank you, Ty, for all that you do to support and promote successful aging in Forsyth County!!

Meet Peter! Peter "Champions his Health" by playing soccer, traveling the world, and volunteering with us to provide respite for a caregiver who needs a break every once in a while. He says of his volunteer service, "I wanted to become a Respite Care volunteer because of what my parents did. My father worked for US AID helping the poor in partnering countries. My mother taught ESL at public libraries. I found the desire to help caregivers when I learned what they often experience - persistent fatigue, sleep deprivation, elevated stress levels, and neglect of personal needs, to name a few. It feels good knowing that I am making a difference in the life of a local caregiver." Peter, Thank you for promoting and supporting successful aging in Forsyth County!

Results are in! Dale, our BSW intern, interviewed close to 40 Minor Home Repair participants, and 100% agreed that they were treated with courtesy and respect, that their request was handled in a timely fashion, and that they would likely refer someone to our program! Meanwhile, all respondents either Strongly Agreed or Agreed that our Minor Home Repair Program contributes to them maintaining their independence at home. Kudos to Linda Lewis and her team of MHR volunteers for a job well done!!!

Meet Frank! Frank "Champions his Health" by volunteering in several different roles at The Shepherd's Center. When asked what his most memorable experience has been thus far, he told us, "I visited with an older gentleman for 3 years. We developed a relationship over the years, and he lived vicariously through me and always wanted to know what I was doing in my life. He enjoyed hearing my stories, we listened to Jazz music and he even cooked meals at times. Incidentally, we shared the same last name and we joked that we were brothers from another mother." Thanks for helping us support and promote successful aging, Frank!

It's Older Americans Month, and this year's theme is "Champion Your Health." Volunteering is a way that you can do just that! In fact, volunteering improves physical health, mental well-being, cognitive function, and longevity, while providing a sense of purpose and connection. If you would like to Champion Your Health by volunteering for us, please contact Martina Bowen, Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected] or 336-748-0217.
