Saint Joseph's Nature Sanctuary

Saint Joseph's Nature Sanctuary A welcoming place where anyone can learn ways of caring for the earth.

In 2021, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Lyon located in Winslow, Maine, decided to offer the use of their four acres with river front on the Sebasticook River and their building for the good of the community. The result of that offer is a unique partnership of local civic and non-profit organizations coming together to form the Saint Joseph’s Nature Sanctuary (SJNS). The SJNS mission statement is

to provide education about caring for the earth, community building and integrating spirituality. The work of SJNS is to strengthen local community connections by providing welcoming indoor and outdoor spaces where anyone can share and learn ways of caring for the earth, take part in hands-on educational and community building experiences, and enjoy an accessible encounter with nature. SJNS is open to organizations and individuals in the community who want to learn about and enjoy the land with others. Current partners include: Winslow Agricultural Commission, Kennebec/Messalonskee Trails, Citizen’s Climate Lobby, Mid-Maine Permaculture, Maine Master Naturalists members, Winslow Girl Scout Troop 545, Waterville Habitat for Humanity and other friends and neighbors. In 2023, Joseph House, a screened-in learning center was built by Waterville Habitat for Humanity and other volunteers, and funded with donations from the community. In 2024, tree guilds and other plantings, along with nature trails with signage will be constructed.

Using / Visiting the Center at 80 Garland Rd, Winslow, Maine

Dear Friends

With our first beautiful snowfall of the winter season, we would like to share with you reminders about using the Center in the winter months.

Please...

be careful parking and walking in front of the Center - snow collects on the solar panels and will slide off suddenly and quickly,

walk with caution outside as the surfaces may be slippery, and

remove wet / dirty footwear and leave it in our entry room (you are welcome to bring slippers).

In unity,

the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon - Maine

Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon - Maine
Please join our fundraising campaign for the St. Joseph Nature Sanctuary

Dear Friends,

We have accomplished an incredible amount of work at the St. Joseph Nature Sanctuary since we began this journey in 2021! With help from partners and donors like you, we have finished building Joseph House, developed a well-attended schedule of Skills Sharing events, developed a perimeter trail, planted several gardens, built earth berms to alleviate water erosion, and more.

With your help, we can continue to build and grow! We are raising funds now to pave the path to the Joseph House, run electricity to Joseph House, build a picnic area, build additional trails around the property, continue to host Skills Sharing events and continue to care for and maintain the existing site.

If you are able to help, please click the fundraising link to go to our donation page. We truly appreciate your support!

With gratitude,

the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon - Maine and the St. Joseph Nature Sanctuary partners

SJNS is offering two Skills Sharing workshops this month. Join us to learn how to identify birds.

Birders find that paying attention to 6 different features of a bird, in addition to color, can help make the identification. In the first part of this workshop, we will review what these characteristics are to help you become a better birder.
