Winnetka Future Energy Coalition

Winnetka Future Energy Coalition Winnetka Trustees are voting on an electric power contract that locks us in until 2055. The contract has no price or renewable mix guarantees.

It is backed by Big Coal:
it's dirty, costly, and risky. Join us to ask them to bid the contract!

The world-renowned non-profit think tank Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) has tried to explain to Village Trustees the financial and environmental reasons the country is moving away from risky, undiversified coal-generation contracts. Per the Village report prepared for the June 3 meeting, it appears no one in the Village has read this report.

The Chicago Tribune Editorial Board agrees that Winnetka Trustees should ignore the April 30 deadline to extend its power contract and take more time to evaluate our options. "These municipalities [Winnetka, Naperville, and St. Charles] are being asked to decide right now how they will keep the lights on for the next three decades. A determination on such a consequential matter must come only after all options are assessed and there is sufficient time for public input. Those conditions won’t be met by April 30."

A power consortium wants to know by April 30 whether municipal utilities run by Winnetka, Naperville and St. Charles will remain members past 2035.

Please come and bring a neighbor!
Our Trustees are considering an energy contract proposal for 2035-2055. We urge the Trustees to reject the proposal and instead seek solutions that will reduce our dependency on coal and give us the best chance to move towards a clean, renewable future.

Please sign this petition to ask the Department of Energy for more transparency about a funding application for carbon capture technology at the Prairie State Generating Plant (the coal plant that supplies Winnetka with most of its electricity).

Please sign on to this letter to the DOE if you are an Illinois citizen concerned about using federal funds for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology on a coal plant, or a citizen served by a public power provider that is an investor in the Prairie State Generating Company (PSGC-Coal Pla...

Here's another opinion piece about the IMEA contract extension for 2035. State Senator Donald DeWitte writes, "While I agree with the position that we need to reduce greenhouse gases and transition into the future, the reality is that there currently are not enough renewable energy resources in Illinois to power all homes on a 24/7 basis. There is still significant work to do to assure our energy grid has adequate reliable supply made up entirely from renewable resources."

Naperville, Winnetka and the City of St. Charles, a community I represent, are currently considering contract extensions with their municipal utility’s wholesale electric provider, the Illinois Muni...

Winnetka is one of 32 communities that contracts with IMEA for electricity. The largest member is Naperville. A group of citizens formed "Clean Energy Alliance of Naperville." Check out their website to learn more about the issues and their position on contract extension.

The Clean Energy Alliance of Naperville (CLEAN) urges our fellow citizens to learn more about Naperville's joint ownership of coal-fired generation and to join efforts to raise the political will for Naperville city leaders to transition our coal-fired ownership to clean energy.
