Wingo was established in 1854 as a stop along the New Orleans and Ohio Railroad, a predecessor line of the Illinois Central. The city was originally named "Wingo Station" after local landowner Jerman J. The City incorporated in 1872 and dropped "Station" in 1882. Wingo is a rural area in far west Kentucky with approximately 600 people living in the city limits of 627 acres. This is a farming commu
nity that loves to get together for any reason. Being the rural area that we are, we enjoy the great outdoors in many ways such as hunting and fishing, walking and enjoying events on our beautiful walking trail, spending time at the ball park for summer league, going to the farmers market on Saturday mornings, and relaxing around the fire or on a porch with family and friends. You might think that a rural area like this would not have good internet service, but that would be wrong. We have great high speed internet which is not shared with thousands of other people living right on top of each other like in the big cities. So everyone in the household can stream all they want and keep going. Wingo is a great location for multiple reasons. With access to Interstate 69, we are only 2 1/2 hours from Nashville, 2 1/2 hours from Memphis, and 3 hours from St. We go shopping in Nashville for the day or maybe spend the weekend for a concert. We go to Memphis for the BBQ, Ikea, and Trader Joe's. St Louis for a Cardinals baseball game is a must. For local fun we are only 30 minutes from Columbus Belmont State Park/Mississippi River. We also have Kentucky and Barkley Lakes within an hour drive. These are huge lakes with camping grounds, fishing, hunting, biking trails, lakeside resorts, boating, water sports, restaurants, and more. WE ARE IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO SO MANY PLACES AND DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES! Our little town can take care of itself. We have a post office, grocery store, city hall, bank, Dollar General, gas station, car lot, elementary school, ball park, code enforcement, a variety of churches, walking trail, and farmers market, all within the city limits. Go outside of the city limits and you will find all kinds of small businesses as well. Mechanics, wood shops, lumber mills, leather work, jewelry makers, seamstress, welders, artist, construction and roofing companies, plumbers, beauticians, and much more. So if you are looking for that small, all American town,,, you found it right here in Wingo! And if you are traveling, stop in Wingo and take a walk down our beautiful walking trail for a nice break. Dog friendly area too.
