Anatolian Shepherd mix Marley wakes up at 5:30 a.m. every day in her tiny home at Veterans Community Project. After the usual morning business, she heads straight for the on-site dog park (which, yes, is complete with a tiny dog house).

And when the temperatures reach 60 degrees on a February day like today, she and her Air Force Veteran owner may not come back inside for hours.

One of the things that sets VCP apart from traditional shelters is our individual tiny home approach, which means we can welcome dogs and the healing role they can play for Veterans.

For Marley, that means a life filled with zoomies, boops, and cuddles. Even when she visits the volunteer veterinarian each month, she arrives with a wagging tail.

For her owner, Marley’s presence has meant something even bigger.

“I was a mess when I got Marley,” she shared. “But this girl has changed my focus. Less about what went wrong in my past and more about a stable future together.”

Rescuing Marley became part of her journey to rebuild after finding herself among the more than 30,000 Veterans experiencing homelessness nationwide. She said her "entire existence has changed" since she began waking up in her tiny home instead of her Jeep Patriot.

And now, despite the early alarm clock, those mornings are really starting to feel different.

“Every day,” she said, “I wake up with gratitude.”
