The Red Knot Youth Birders had a great night Friday night (although the owls didn’t arrive until almost 10pm, and half the kids had gone…) We visited Rushton Woods Banding Station in PA. This is a northern saw-whet owl. Jess leads the youth birders but is also a ba**er at Rushton, so she did a great talk and demo for us. The youth had the opportunity to practice measuring the ‘stuffie owl’ with the measuring tools while we waited for an owl to be drawn to the lure and fly into the mist nets. At almost 10pm 2 owls were brought back from the nets in little bags which help keep them calm until they are recorded and released. The first one is shown below and was a new capture, hatch year bird. All birds were handled and banded for research purposes under state and federal permits. Great youth bird walk on Sunday at Burrow’s Run, Red Knot Youth Birders!!! 37 species including some fun warblers (black-throated green, magnolia, northern parula, American redstart and more!!) We had a good kook at a Lincoln’s sparrow and had the first white-throated sparrow of the season! Some lifers for most of the kids! A successful trip for sure!!! Save the date for our next bird walk Oct 26. Details to come!
