This was one of 2 beautification projects completed this year by the Cape Fear Garden Club Civic Improvements Committee . The first was at the Wilmington City Municipal Golf Course where we planted 234 azaleas along the Pine Grove Road entrance and road. This was accomplished with funding from an Azalea Garden Tour Disbursements Grant along with our committees budgeted funds. We wanted to make a beautiful statement alongside Pine Grove Road where all of the azaleas are clearly visible.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Members of the Cape Fear Garden Club planted 234 azaleas at the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. The flowers were provided thanks to a grant from the 20-22 Azalea Garden Tour and Civic Improvements Committee. According to the Chairwoman of the Civic Improvements Committee ...

Eight CFGC members joined in the culmination of a Civic Improvements facilitated project with the City of Wilmington to plant the median at 3rd and Market Street. This project was funded by a 2022 Azalea Garden Tour Disbursements Grant along with a generous donation from Martin Meyerson for the fountain-like planter that was ordered with the help of Nina Brown of the Stone Garden. The city had come to our committee to ask for our recommendations in what to plant in the median after removing the Civil War Statue previously erected there. Howard Capps came up with a planting design that was used in the grant application and our committee picked out the planter and facilitated getting it ordered with Nina's help.

On Friday, April 20, the project was finished with CFGC members planting alongside 3 of the City Parks Staff. Many people rolled down their windows as they drove by to speak encouraging words, thanking us for making this median beautiful. The other grant the city received went to the Municipal Golf Course Azalea project that we participated in earlier this year and planted 234 azaleas! It's been a banner year for beautification! Thanks to all the hard workers on our committee and to those who joined in!

The former site of a Confederate Monument in downtown Wilmington has now been replaced with fresh flowers.

Civic Improvements Committee worked with the city for years when the concept of a downtown Riverfront Park started to emerge. The Cape Fear Garden Club Inc voted to support the idea of sponsoring this section of the downtown Riverfront Park. I can’t tell you how proud I am of our club for being a part of this wonderful project. The garden is filled with native plant specimens and trees and is a true pollinator garden. Our garden is adjacent to the children’s playground area and some neighboring construction that will be completed over the next couple of years. While the park has still not reached its final phase, it is easy to see that this is a beautiful space to enjoy for all of our residents. Freeman landscaping has installed and is maintaining the plants currently and they have been wonderful to work with as well as the city staff. David Pugh is the park superintendent and has been very supportive of our space in this garden. We plan to continue an active involvement with this urban garden and also are looking at this space as a possible site for our centennial celebration with the installation of sculpture in the middle of the garden. So stay tuned, there is so much yet to come! In the meantime, take a trip down and see the garden and the rest of this beautiful park!

Another annual activity sponsored by our committee is Plant an Azalea Week, which is always the first week of April. This year, we planted azaleas at beautiful River Road Park, a New Hanover County Park off River Road. Janine Powell coordinates this event and we had several County Commissioners participate, along with a representative from David Rouser’s office. The Azalea Ambassadors were present in their debut year to be a part of the celebration along with Cape fear garden club members and President Linda Snider. The planting of these azaleas completed a landscaping project that Civic Improvements did with New Hanover County Parks. Check out this gorgeous little park that has waterfront on the river!
