The Vision for Eagles Island

*Make a wild, historic island in the heart of the Cape Fear region publicly accessible while protecting its ecosystem.*

1. *Connect people to nature & history*
Turn 13 miles of shoreline, 5 miles of creeks, and old rice canals into an outdoor classroom. Paddlers can explore tidal marshes, spot wildlife, and see artifacts from the island’s 1700s-1800s rice plantation era.

2. *Build a regional recreation hub*
Formalize the blueway trail network with named routes, maps, wayfinding signs, and interpretive signage. Link the island to 73 miles of existing blueways and 187 miles of Cape Fear River access, connecting Wilmington, Belville, Leland, and beyond.

3. *Create low-impact access points*
Develop boardwalks, trails, and shelters on the 79-acre district-owned parcel across from the USS North Carolina Battleship. Add a public kayak launch, rental facility, picnic/rest platforms, and observation decks — all designed to keep the marsh ecosystem intact.

4. *Support community & conservation*
Use partnerships with private landowners and outfitters to expand access without heavy development. The goal: establish Eagles Island’s identity as a nature preserve, wildlife sanctuary, and outdoor recreation spot for generations. e37a430b

In short: _Preserve the wild character of Eagles Island, make it easier for folks in Belville and around the Cape Fear region to experience it by water and on foot, and tell its natural + cultural story along the way._
