Here is a Post Script to the fore mentioned portrait… Gilliland is to have supposed to have sat for the rendering by Ralph Earl while he (Will) was in debtors prison in NYC with Earl (but the dates of their incarcerations together are sketchy) interesting is that there are 2 (two) portraits of William Gilliland painted by Earl. In addition to ‘our’ portrait here in Willsboro the New York Historical Society in NYC has another of the same subject. The differences of the two paintings is that ‘ours’ has Will with a ‘standard’ background for the time. Where as the other in NYC has no background. We don’t know the reason for this other than speculation that Will did not like Earl’s initial rendition of himself…

It would be incredible if we could get the two painting’s together next year as a celebration of Willsboro’s 260th birthday. However, the doner of the NYC portrait placed stipulations on this piece of history that it can not be loaned - let alone be on public display.

Story to continue… we have an interesting chapter about how we (Willsboro Heritage Society) stumbled across OUR portrait and how it came to Willsboro.
