Did you Know?
The Elks began with an act of compassion.
In 1867, a group of entertainers in New York City known as the 'Jolly Corks' gathered for friendship and fellowship. The group took its name from a lighthearted trick introduced by Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian, who would later become a founder of the Elks.
But when one of their members passed away shortly before Christmas, leaving behind a wife and children in financial hardship, the group recognized a greater purpose.
They realized their fellowship could be more than friendship and entertainment. It could become a way to help others in times of need.
That spirit of compassion helped inspire the founding of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in 1868, establishing charity and service as cornerstones of the organization.
More than 150 years later, that commitment continues through Elks Lodges across the nation, including Williston Elks Lodge #1214, proudly serving our community since 1911.
