Choosing when to start kindergarten can feel like a big decision—especially when your child technically can go.

But in Vermont, families have options.

Through Act 166, all children ages 3–5 (including 5-year-olds who are not yet enrolled in kindergarten) are eligible for publicly funded prekindergarten—covering at least 10 hours per week in a qualified program. (act166vtinfo)

That means families can choose an extra year of play-based learning without giving up access to state support.

And that extra year can matter.

Play isn’t “extra”—it’s how young children build the foundation for:
• Confidence and independence
• Problem-solving and flexible thinking
• Language and social connection
• A lifelong love of learning

Research shows that the early years are a critical window for brain development, shaped by relationships, exploration, and meaningful experiences. (act166vtinfo)

At Bellwether, we believe in honoring childhood—and trusting that readiness looks different for every child.

Kindergarten will be there.
The question is: what does your child need right now?
