Join Me at Bellwether!
A Place Where Children Are Known, Loved, and Free to Grow

Dear Families,

My name is Laura Hoopes, Bellwether’s Director, and I am so glad you are considering preschool at Bellwether for your child and your family.

For many years, Bellwether has been a place where children are deeply known, creativity is honored, and learning grows naturally from relationships, play, and joy. I have had the privilege of being both a preschool teacher and co-director here before the school paused for a year, and I am grateful beyond words to be returning as we reopen Bellwether with intention, care, and hope.

I began my career as an elementary school teacher, but it was in preschool that I found my true calling. Young children bring an honesty, curiosity, and openness that continually inspires me. In my classroom and in my leadership, I center learning in relationships. Children thrive when they feel safe, seen, and loved. Everything meaningful grows from there.

At Bellwether, learning is active and embodied. Children move their bodies, explore outdoors every day, dig in the garden, build, sing, tell stories, paint, and wonder. Art, music, movement, and storytelling are not extras here, they are essential ways children think, express themselves, and make meaning of the world. Through play, children develop the skills they need for kindergarten and beyond: confidence, empathy, persistence, problem-solving, and joy in learning.

You can expect calm, predictable classrooms with clear routines and trusted adults. Our teachers are warm, playful, emotionally attuned, and deeply committed to early childhood. I believe wholeheartedly that joyful teachers create happy, secure children, and our classrooms will be filled with laughter, creativity, and care.

Bellwether is also a place where kindness is taught, modeled, and practiced every day. We support children in learning how to navigate big feelings, resolve conflicts with compassion, and care for one another and their environment. Emotional safety is foundational here.

Our facilities support this work beautifully. With multiple classrooms, generous outdoor space, and a working garden, children have room to move, explore, and follow their curiosity. We are reopening with a commitment to consistency, reliability, and full-day programming that families can count on.

Most of all, Bellwether is a community. We see ourselves as partners with families, and it is our hope to build relationships that support your child not just for a year, but for a lifetime. When children leave Bellwether, they leave knowing who they are, how to care for others, and how to approach the world with curiosity and confidence.

I warmly invite you to join us for our upcoming open houses (March 7th 10-12 or March 22nd 2:30-4:00), schedule a personal tour (which I offer on most Mondays), or talk on the phone or over video. I hope you’ll reach out with any questions or simply to connect. I would love to meet you and learn about your child.

With warmth and gratitude,

Laura Hoopes, Director
Bellwether

Happy February ❄️✨

Even though it’s still deep winter here in Vermont, today marks Midwinter (Imbolc)—a gentle turning point in the season and a celebration of returning light. Imbolc invites us to notice the small signs of spring: longer days, budding trees, and the quiet stirring beneath the snow.

This time of year is perfect for simple winter rituals with children—lighting a candle at dusk, bundling up for a snowy woods walk, watching for animal tracks, or gathering twigs and evergreens to bring a bit of nature indoors.

And as the light slowly grows, so does Bellwether 🌱
Pre-K enrollment opens February 6, and we can’t wait to welcome new families into our learning community.

🌱 Something special is growing at Bellwether…

After many months of listening, dreaming, and careful planning, we’re so excited to share that Bellwether is moving forward with a Pre-K/early education classroom opening in Fall 2026 🤍

This next chapter will begin with a single, thoughtfully designed Pre-K / early education classroom for children ages 3–5, rooted in what Bellwether has always done best:
✨ play-based learning
🌿 deep connection to nature
🤍 relationships, belonging, and care

We’re also thrilled to share that our beloved Laura Hoopes will be serving as Director, stewarding this work with the experience, heart, and leadership so many families know and trust.

Enrollment opens Friday, February 6
We’ll be prioritizing families looking for 8:30–3:00, M–F with 2/3/5 day options
📩 Interested in part-time or afterschool hours? Send us an email — offerings may grow based on interest.

In a world that feels heavy in many ways, Bellwether is stepping forward as a place of light, curiosity, and connection. If you or someone you love is looking for a school grounded in values, community, and childhood wonder — we’d love for you to learn more.

Hello! We’re looking for thoughtful, committed individuals to join the Bellwether School Board (prek-5th grade) as we reimagine what this beloved school can become.

For over 30 years, Bellwether was a model of holistic education—nurturing each child’s full potential through kindness, creativity, multi-age classrooms, limited/no screens, and a strong connection to nature. It was more than a school—it was a hopeful, inclusive community.

At a time when families need support and meaningful connection more than ever, we’re determined to bring Bellwether back. And we need the right people around the table to do it.

You don’t need Board experience or a Bellwether background—just a desire to help rebuild something truly special. Skills in finance, law, fundraising, or nonprofit work are especially helpful, but most of all, we’re looking for people who care about children and believe in this mission.

If this speaks to you—or someone you know—we’d love to hear from you! Join us.

Reach out via email at [email protected] or respond to this post with your email address and we’ll reach out to you!

Dearest extended Bellwether Family,
It is with unbearably heavy hearts that we let you all know that Bellwether will be closing its doors at the end of this academic year, June 2025. Making this decision was not an easy one, and a lot of factors led to the conclusion that closing is necessary. We are so very grateful for the past thirty years of community, learning, magic, wonder, connection, hope, and love that has been the hallmark of life at Bellwether. As those of you who have left Bellwether already know, this special school leaves a mark on its students, families, and staff. It has been a place where childhoods have been savored, memories have been made, minds and hearts have grown stronger, and rich, meaningful relationships have been built with our learning, our world, and our selves.

It is hard to imagine a world where Bellwether isn’t there. It still has not sunk in for any of us. But just as Wendy must leave Neverland, and Lucy Pevensie must bid farewell to Narnia, we too will have to say adieu to this wonderous place we had the privilege to call “home.” A.A. Milne wrote about Christopher Robin growing up and away from the Hundred Acre Wood saying: “wherever they go, and whatever happens to them along the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest, a little boy and his Bear will always be playing.” No matter where you go, Bellwether friends...in the hearts of your Bellwether family...you will always be playing. Thank you for thirty years of magic. We will miss this school so very much.
