A Homeless cat, Pilgrim, goes home.
​
​A pilgrim is someone who goes through horrible hardships on a journey to a sacred place, a place where he may be transformed. The cat who was thrown away, then slowly dying, wandered a neighborhood, door to door. Finally, when people saw that the poor fellow was nearly done for, they contacted the Grant County Friends of the Shelter for help for the cat. The Friends of the Shelter believed he had earned the name Pilgrim.

​Of course, Pilgrim didn’t know the concept of a pilgrimage. Yet, he had faith in people and hoped that he’d survive. Those of you who’ve read about Pilgrim know that the Grant County Friends of the Shelter wished, hoped and prayed for the same happily ever after for Pilgrim. They put out a plea on Facebook. Many wonderful people responded, each of whom would have given Pilgrim a wonderful life.

​The people who’d met Pilgrim saw that he’d lost most of his fur. He was a walking skeleton. And Pilgrim wasn’t young. If Pilgrim had a chance to recover, he needed premium food, indoor shelter, peace, quiet and nursing. One particular family was the first to offer all that.

​Pilgrim went to his forever home on Friday, October 2, 2026. Here is a photo of the expression on Pilgrim’s face as he left his foster home.

​And here is Pilgrim a few hours later, sharing the bed where he gets to sleep for the rest of his life.

During Pilgrim’s first night in his new home, his person wrote, “You were right. He’s wonderful. Poor baby, I can’t imagine what he’s been through and still remained so loving.”

Thank you to everyone who cared about this one little, forgotten cat. Love matters, even if you never met Pilgrim.

Pilgrim is a natural-born — or trained — cuddler who’s fallen on heartbreakingly hard times. This tabby/ Russian Blue, with aqua-marine eyes, would have been a dazzling kitten, until the neglect started.

At some point, the neglect turned into abandonment in a mobile home park. Somewhere, his ears developed hematomas and became permanently cauliflower-shaped, like a fighter who lost more often than he won.

But through it all, Pilgrim stayed sweet. He jumps on laps and nuzzles under chins — whenever he can. But that isn’t very often.

This former house cat, who's neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and about eight years old, found his way to a cat colony. There he’s managed to sn**ch enough food to survive, just barely.

The colony caretaker called to say that a cat seemed to be wasting away.

The GCFOS took him to the vet and the good news is that Pilgrim doesn’t have any dreadful diseases, like FIV or Feline Leukemia. The bad news is, he simply can’t hold his own in a colony. He needs to come back indoors to survive.

Please, please, will someone take him in, temporarily or permanently?

It’s that time of the year, temperatures are beginning to fall, winter will arrive before we know it. We are in search of styrofoam coolers to fashion into cat shelters.

Styrofoam coolers, mainly the Omaha Steak ones (at least 14 × 14 × 17) to make cat shelters out of them. If you have any and don't need them we would be happy to take them off your hands. Thank you!

Norman is the sweetest, most gentle, and quiet boy in the shelter. Norman is only 1 1/2 years old, he weighs 68 pounds, he's neutered, current on vaccines, deworming, and flea/tick prevention. Norman is great with other dogs, lived in a home with multiple cats, and he would likely be fine with children. He is a lab mix, walks GREAT on a leash, and appears to be housebroken. Riley is an adorable little 35 pound beagle Brittany spaniel mix who is only about 8 months old. He appears to be housebroken, and he leash walks great. He's great with other dogs, loves to play, he's fine with cats and he loves kids! Riley is a perfect little package for someone looking for a nice, medium sized buddy.
