Nelson Louis Jones was 11 years old.

On October 27, 1990, Nelson was home alone in Hope, Kansas. That evening, his family returned to a quiet house. Moments later, he was found in his bedroom.

He had been strangled.

There were no signs of forced entry.

No signs of a struggle.

Investigators believe Nelson likely knew the person who took his life. Earlier that day, neighbors saw him outside—riding his bike, waiting for a friend, living a normal childhood afternoon.

Between that moment… and nightfall… something changed forever. More than 30 years later, no one has been held accountable.

No arrest.
No justice.
Just silence.

Nelson’s case remains open. His story has been shared across Kansas—even featured in the state’s cold case playing card deck—in hopes that someone will come forward.

Because someone knows.

Someone remembers.

And after all this time, the truth is still out there.

Project Heaven proudly advocated for stronger protections against online sextortion and the predators targeting our children.

Today, Caleb’s Law was ceremonially signed in honor of Caleb Moore, and I want to especially recognize the incredible courage of the Moore family. In the face of unimaginable loss, they chose to fight for other Kansas families and future victims. That takes tremendous strength.

Protecting children should never be political. This is about saving lives, increasing awareness, and making sure families have tools and protections before tragedy strikes.

Kansas is better because the Moore family refused to stay silent. 🙏🇺🇸

I was honored to be joined by Caleb Moore’s family to ceremonially sign Caleb’s Law. The bill, named after Caleb Moore, who died by su***de after being targeted by an online sextortion scheme, was championed by his family to help protect young Kansans from future attacks.

This is evil, plain and simple. Children deserve safety, innocence, and protection, not exploitation at the hands of adults who know exactly what they are doing. Kansas must continue taking these crimes seriously and pursue the strongest penalties possible.

According to a release, 22-year-old Addilynn Jean Onuffer pleaded guilty to distribution of child po*******hy and was sentenced to just over 13 years in prison. Her husband, 27-year-old Gavin Onuffer,

Evan Coen was just 15 months old.
On October 19, 2009, EMS responded to a home in Wichita for a child who was not breathing.

That child was Evan.

He was rushed to the hospital and placed on life support. Doctors found devastating injuries—multiple skull fractures, along with other trauma in different stages of healing.

These were not injuries from a single moment.

They told a story of repeated harm.

Evan died from those injuries.

A man living in the home—the boyfriend of Evan’s mother—was arrested on suspicion of child abuse. Detectives presented their case.

But no charges were filed in time.
He was released.

And from that moment on… everything stopped.

No arrest.
No answers.
No justice.

Evan’s case went cold.

A 15-month-old child does not suffer injuries like this without someone knowing what happened.

Someone knows the truth.
Someone has lived with it for years.
Someone chose silence.

Evan didn’t get a voice.

So we say his name.

🕯️ Evan Coen mattered.
🕯️ He deserved safety.
🕯️ He deserved to grow up.

This isn’t the solution we want—but it’s a safeguard we need.

JUST IN: The Wichita City Council has unanimously approved the city's first Safe Haven Baby Box.

This will be the fourth Safe Haven Baby Box in Kansas. The others are in Hutchinson, Salina and Garden City.

🌻 KANSAS CHILD SPOTLIGHT 🔦

Aurora Exon was just 2 years old when her life was taken in January 2021.

Aurora, lived in Topeka with her father, Jeffrey James Exon. She had been seen by medical providers multiple times throughout her life. Even as concerns about her weight were raised, she was still described as a happy, active child.

By early 2021, that changed.

When authorities arrived at the home, Aurora was already gone.

The autopsy told the story her small body could not. She was severely malnourished and dehydrated. There was no food in her system. The cause of death was starvation—deprivation of basic care—and it was ruled a homicide.

In the final days of her life, evidence showed she grew weaker and weaker. She depended on someone to feed her, to care for her… and that care never came.

A jury found Exon guilty of first-degree felony murder, along with other charges tied to her neglect. The Kansas Supreme Court later upheld those convictions.

Aurora did not die from a sudden act.

She died from being forgotten.

From being left without the most basic human needs—food, water, care.

She was only two years old.

🕯️ Aurora Exon mattered.
🕯️ She deserved safety.
🕯️ She deserved to be cared for.
🕯️ She deserved to grow up.

And her story is not over. Because neglect is not always loud. Sometimes it is quiet, hidden, and slow—and just as deadly.
