🚨‼️🚨NEW LOCATION DROPPED‼️🚨‼️
ICTTU encourages you to attend the town hall on data centers this Thursday, March 12 at 6 P.M., in the K-State Research and Extension - Sedgwick County (7001 W 21st St). There will be an opportunity for residents to give feedback directly to County Commissioners - as there has been a stay on further development through June 12th to allow for further regulation and comments from community members.
Data centers are large facilities containing computer servers and are used for data storage and analytics, generative AI models like ChatGPT, and streaming services. Unfortunately, they create noise, air, and light pollution for the surrounding residents, decreasing quality of life and contributing to hearing loss, insomnia, and stress.
A large data center also wastes around 5 million gallons of water daily - in order to cool the computer systems so they don't overheat and malfunction. They draw local water supplies away from residents and further stress the critical water infrastructure of south-central Kansas.
Data centers have historically not paid their fair share of utility costs, especially for the amount of electricity they consume. Consumers, including residential customers, then have to pay higher costs as a result. Research indicates that the automation capabilities of AI can replace jobs performed by people, and those job losses will primarily affect minority and low-income communities.
Data centers are not worth the health, economic and environmental impacts that they have caused for other communities. We encourage community members to show up to ask questions and raise these concerns at the public forum this TODAY!!! March 12th, 2026 @ 6pm.

SB 391 was passed out of the Senate and has a hearing in House Federal & State Affairs on Thursday! We need to Email the Committee your opposition to this bill and submit formal testimony!

EMAIL SCRIPT:
Dear Chair Kessler, Vice Chair Schmoe, and members of Members of the House Committee on Federal & State Affairs

As a tenant I deserve to have local housing protections, and the city and county I live in should have the opportunity to strengthen renter protections to match our local conditions. There is no one size fits all when it comes to housing policy. Prioritize Kansas renters over corporate owners of rental housing and oppose SB 391 & its companion bill HB 2504.

This bill would help SO many tenants. Renters should have the same flexibility offered to homeowners, who can pay mortgages in multiple payments, as required by federal law.

Additionally, under this bill all income should be considered when applying for a rental but so many of us are being screened out for using SSI/SSDI, child support, veteran benefits, even tips/gig work as income gets your application screened out and that ain’t right! It’s discrimination!

Reach out to our tenant union if you want to be apart of strengthening tenant rights and power!

Kansas renters would be allowed to pay their landlords in increments under a proposal that tackles housing affordability and access issues.

Nine tenants organized by the Debt Collective are refusing to pay back rent, hoping to inspire others to do the same.
