🚨‼️🚨NEW LOCATION DROPPED‼️🚨‼️
ICTTU encourages you to attend the town hall on data centers this Thursday, March 12 at 6 P.M., in the K-State Research and Extension - Sedgwick County (7001 W 21st St). There will be an opportunity for residents to give feedback directly to County Commissioners - as there has been a stay on further development through June 12th to allow for further regulation and comments from community members.
Data centers are large facilities containing computer servers and are used for data storage and analytics, generative AI models like ChatGPT, and streaming services. Unfortunately, they create noise, air, and light pollution for the surrounding residents, decreasing quality of life and contributing to hearing loss, insomnia, and stress.
A large data center also wastes around 5 million gallons of water daily - in order to cool the computer systems so they don't overheat and malfunction. They draw local water supplies away from residents and further stress the critical water infrastructure of south-central Kansas.
Data centers have historically not paid their fair share of utility costs, especially for the amount of electricity they consume. Consumers, including residential customers, then have to pay higher costs as a result. Research indicates that the automation capabilities of AI can replace jobs performed by people, and those job losses will primarily affect minority and low-income communities.
Data centers are not worth the health, economic and environmental impacts that they have caused for other communities. We encourage community members to show up to ask questions and raise these concerns at the public forum this TODAY!!! March 12th, 2026 @ 6pm.
