Rainy/Cold Weather Donations Needed

Summer may be over but we continue to do outreach every Thursday night in downtown Wichita alongside Meadowlark Care Collective and other groups!

Wet and cold weather brings it's own challenges and needs for our unhoused neighbors, so if you're able to donate items or funds to help us purchase them it will be greatly appreciated. ❤️

Please contact your city council members and city manager to let them know we are not okay with the treatment of our neighbors in Chapin Park who are being displaced from their home and community with nowhere to go and no clear paths forward to receive help. This is a heartless, pointless plan that only serves to disenfranchise and dehumanize already vulnerable people. The city simply wants to claim they care while simultaneously making these people's lives immeasurably more difficult right before we head into the dangerous winter weather.

My statement regarding Chapin Park.

I have been contacted by many of you over the last couple of days. From the bench and privately, I’ve been vocal in my opposition to the manner in which the City is clearing the Chapin Park encampment and the lack of clear communication with the public about the plan moving forward.

We’ve faced homelessness in Chapin Park for nearly 11 years. Yet, we still lack the resources to transition people into stable housing with supportive case management. Vouchers without housing attached are not housing. Without meaningful solutions, we are simply moving the challenge from one part of our community to another.

I’m also thinking about our housing staff on the front lines, witnessing the heartbreaking reality of moving people from places they’ve called home for years without the additional funding and resources needed to guide them toward stability. We cannot ask our staff to manage this crisis without equipping them to succeed.

My heart goes out to everyone impacted, including nearby residents, our unhoused neighbors, and the volunteers working to help.

I encourage our community to contact the City Manager and every City Council member, including the Mayor. We deserve transparency, accountability, and a clear plan post clean up.

We cannot solve homelessness by simply moving people. We must invest in solutions that help people find stability and rebuild their lives.

HYDRATION HOMIES (ALMOST) END OF SUMMER OUTREACH RECAP

90F+ EVERY DAY IN AUGUST: Wichita reached 90 degrees or higher every single day in August 2026 the first time this has ever happened in an August since records began in 1888.

6TH HOTTEST AUGUST EVER: August 2026 tied with 1980 as the 6th Warmest August on record, with an average temperature of 85.2°F.

48 DAYS IN A ROW OVER 90°F: The city endured a 48+ day streak of 90+ temperatures.

2ND DRIEST JULY-AUGUST EVER: Eisenhower National Airport received only 0.75 inches of rain across July and August, making it the 2nd driest July to August period on record (behind only 0.25 inches during the Dust Bowl in 1936).

We received $5,647 in donations this summer from 170 donors! (Including several repeat donors)

We purchased six pallets of bottled water for the lord's diner at $193.44 each for a total cost of $1,160.64.

We redistributed $390 cash to other local mutual aid and outreach groups.

100% of the remaining funds went towards purchasing water, ice, electrolytes, snacks, hats, sunscreen, and other outreach supplies that were handed out directly to our unhoused neighbors.

We couldn’t have made it through the summer without our community’s support - and with it we were able to help so many people stay hydrated and know that they’re seen and cared for. ❤️💧

It's currently about 101° and I'm about to head downtown to check on folks in this heat and hand out some water, electrolytes, and snacks. Keep in mind that today the day shelter, library, and all other city "cooling centers" are closed and will also be closed tomorrow for the holiday. The buses also do not run on Sundays and will not be running tomorrow for the holiday.

This situation leaves people basically nowhere to go to escape the heat during the day. And I've heard from multiple of my unhoused neighbors that they are constantly being forced to leave shady spots on the sidewalk by the police, even though they're not offered anywhere else to go.

We are all tired of summer at this point, but imagine if you didn't have any way to escape the heat, go into an air conditioned space whenever you wanted, get a drink of water when you were thirsty, or even have clothes to protect you from the rays of the sun. That's what many of our neighbors are dealing with on a daily basis and any small act of kindness you can provide towards them will go a very long way.

So please keep water and snacks in your car if you can and look out for your vulnerable community members. We can take care of each other! ❤️💧

Update: as of this morning the city has once again made rides to and from any "cooling center" (libraries, community centers, recreation centers) free through this Saturday, September 5th. Please note that the buses do not operate on Sundays and will not be operating on Monday because of the holiday.

Please share this information with anyone you see struggling to traverse on foot in this dangerous heat, most people who are unhoused don't have a reliable way to check the Internet to receive this information and may not know about the program.
