When asked, “What made you start Murdock House Farm Sanctuary?”, I always jest that we had a midlife crisis. After all, who would sell their homes in the city, with all of the modern day luxuries, to buy a home built in 1922 without so much as a closet? The truth is, Mike and I wouldn’t trade it for the world! The reason why is in the picture above.
It’s interesting how our priorities change as we get older. For Mike and I, we became more “aware”. Cast into, what looks like a landscape, out of the show “Survivor”, one quickly realizes that our priorities aren’t what we say we are, but are revealed by how we live. We have no central air, or heat. We have, what we coin, a “one butt” kitchen. We are void of any closet space, and our washer and dryer are located on our front porch! Our phone reception is hit and miss. We always joke that if we have a heart attack, that we hope to be in a spot with service, or we may be planning a service! All of the amenities that we don’t have pale in comparison with what we do have - that of which defines us.
We decided to purchase our farm before stepping one foot into the house. We saw the beauty of the land, and knew deep in our hearts that this is where we were meant to be. We married in December of 2017, and after a short, three-months in our home, we rescued Boone (pictured above left) from a kill pen in Bowie, TX. We weren’t ready for him. We literally put the “cart before the horse.” We had no shelter, no pasture fence... We were very unprepared, but we made it happen. His name means blessing, and Boone truly was our first blessing bestowed upon Murdock House on our first Easter Sunday together. Comanche soon followed (pictured above right). He had been rescued from a kill pen in Peabody, KS. Before we knew it...more blessings followed, each with their own story.
Originally, we had planned to build and operate a kennel at Murdock House, for people to board their dogs. We even had an entry sign made, adorned with dog silhouettes, that read Murdock House. God had a different plan for us however. God took two city dwellers, placed them together, moved them to the country, and then bestowed upon them the greatest responsibility of all - “stewardship of the animals” that He brought to our door.
