Partnership for a Healthier America

Partnership for a Healthier America Founded alongside Former First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign in 2010, PHA is working towards a healthier America powered by good food for all.

In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with but independent from First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! effort and is led by some of the nation's most respected health and childhood obesity advocates. Supporting our efforts is our honorary chair First Lady Michelle Obama and our board of directors, which also includes nationally recognized business leaders, advocates, health professionals, and thought leaders from a variety of backgrounds.

We’re excited to expand our GOOD GOOD Back-to-School campaign, bringing deals and impact directly to communities through brick-and-mortar stores.

Now, families can find GOOD GOOD better-for-you products in-store at GIANT and MARTIN’S locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Through September 3, when shoppers spend $10 on participating GOOD GOOD products, they’ll save $5 at checkout, and The GIANT Company will make a $5 donation to support PHA’s healthy hunger relief initiatives, committing up to $100,000.

Expanding this campaign in-store turns healthier choices into meaningful impact and makes good food more accessible to families wherever they shop.

We’re grateful to our dedicated PHA Board Member, John M., Chief Marketing Officer at The GIANT Company, for championing this partnership and helping make this expanded impact possible. Today, the FDA proposed a rule that would require food manufacturers to notify the agency when they self-determine that an ingredient is “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS). The proposal would give the FDA greater visibility into ingredients entering the food supply and require companies to provide information supporting their safety determinations.

The rule would not eliminate the self-affirmed GRAS pathway, but it would make notification to the FDA mandatory for new and certain existing ingredients — a step toward greater transparency and accountability in our food system.

Learn more about the proposed rule and what it could mean for the food supply:

The agency released a proposal requiring companies to provide more information on chemicals self-affirmed as safe under the controversial GRAS framework.

Joining fellow leaders — including our Good Food Cities partner Ruby J. Ferguson, MEd, MS, RD from the Greater Chicago Food Depository — the panel explored sustainable food models and unlocking economic potential across local food systems.

Real change happens when solutions meet families right where they live.

We were thrilled to be on the ground in Chicago last week to announce the third cycle of our Good Food at Home program in partnership with and local community leader SANAD!

Through this newest cycle, 250 more Chicago-area families will receive $80/month in Fresh Funds for six months to purchase fresh, frozen, and canned produce, alongside a complimentary Instacart+ membership for free delivery and pickup. That brings the total impact of Good Food at Home in Chicago to over 1,000 families served, making this our longest-running and most sustained partnership cycle in the city to date.

A few key highlights of what this partnership is building together:
- Nationwide Reach: Good Food at Home has reached 13 cities across the country, including our newest expansion in Oklahoma City with Hunger Free Oklahoma, delivering over 10 million servings of produce to date.
- Lasting Impact: 78%+ of participating families build a long-term habit of eating more fruits and vegetables well after the program ends.
- Community First Trust: Local partners like Sanad are the backbone of this work, connecting families to dignified, convenient food access that works for their busy lives.

We’re deeply grateful to Instacart, SANAD, and all of our city partners who help make good food accessible in every zip code.

Together with our partners, the Greater Chicago Food Depository and the Chicago Food Equity Council, we are announcing $100,000 in community subgrants to three organizations working to redefine what food access and food retail can look like in Chicago.

Meet the organizations:

Experimental Station: The grant will help train growers and community gardeners to obtain produce merchant licenses, accept SNAP, and sell directly in food-insecure neighborhoods, turning gardeners into licensed business owners under Chicago's new Urban Ag Business License Enhancement Ordinance.

Plant Chicago: The grant will help them run and grow their monthly farmers market, Mercado de Intercambio, supporting cooking demonstrations using seasonal produce and healthy food incentives and a Food Access Manager to keep fresh, locally grown produce reaching the Back of the Yards neighborhood it serves.

Garfield Park Community Council: With the grant, they can expand its year-round market and 10-garden Garden Network, using a mobile cart to deliver produce to homebound seniors and pairing food access with paid workforce training for local teens.

We're proud to work alongside these partners in Chicago, one of our Good Food Cities, to make good food accessible to all.

Through our signature Good Food at Home program, we're eliminating the barriers that keep nutritious food out of reach for families across the country.

By partnering with Instacart and leveraging iQpay's digital technology, we deliver monthly funds straight to families for fresh, frozen, and canned produce. We’re thrilled to expand this impact even further to 430 families in Chicago and Oklahoma City to ensure children stay nourished all summer long.

Read one Denver family's story to see how our Good Food at Home work with iQPay is creating real change:

PHA partnered with the GIVE Center at Denver Human Services (DHS) to provide 450 Denver families with Good Food at Home with iQpay. For three months, families received $80 in digital Good Food Funds to buy fresh, frozen and canned produce at 50 participating local grocery stores, including Walmart,....

From July 1 -7, we joined thousands of nonprofits across the country and Albertsons Companies Foundation in a national movement to help nourish the American Dream.

Thanks to this community, we raised over $585k to support our work to ensure that every child has the freedom to grow, thrive, and dream without hunger standing in the way. Because of your collective generosity, more children and families across America will have access to the nutritious food they need to fulfill their dreams.

To everyone who donated, shared, and supported us earlier this month, THANK YOU. This wouldn’t have been possible without you or the incredible generosity of our partners at Albertsons Companies Foundation.
