The chain reaction has begun.
Across California, cities are now proposing to rename César Chávez Day as Farmworkers Day — shifting the focus from one man to the entire movement.
Los Angeles is already moving, and San Francisco has begun reviewing its own public spaces.

This is not about erasing history.
It is about telling it honestly.

We can honor the farmworker struggle, respect the survivors, and still face the facts with dignity.
This is the moment to give la vuelta — to turn the struggle into truth, clarity, and healing.

We speak today not to provoke, but to understand.
We rise together because moments like this require clarity, compassion, and truth.

Before we judge anyone’s story,
we must understand the psychology behind silence, trauma, and survival.

We now know that many survivors speak decades later —
not for attention, not for power,
but because protecting others becomes more important than protecting the past.

We also understand that relinquishing a child born of violence is not abandonment.
It is a decision shaped by trauma, fear, and the desire to keep a child safe.
We honor the complexity. We honor the courage.

Movements ask for loyalty.
Trauma asks for healing.
And sometimes those two forces collide in ways the public cannot see.

So before we react,
we pause.
We learn.
We listen.

Because two truths can exist at the same time:

A person can contribute greatly to a movement
and
cause harm.

A community can honor the work
and
acknowledge the wounds.

This moment is not about choosing sides.
It is about choosing understanding.

We learn through this.
We grow through this.
We rise through this — together.

When a woman speaks her truth at the edge of her life, she is not breaking history — she is freeing it.

In my social work journey, I have stood beside many women who carried truths too heavy to speak. Dolores Huerta is one of them. I’ve been honored to walk with her — at California’s Democratic State Convention, at the Chávez family’s Tehachapi sanctuary, and through the historic grounds of Weedpatch in Fresno. In every one of those moments, I witnessed her dignity, her clarity, and her unwavering commitment to truth. I believe her. I believe in the integrity she has carried her entire life, and I believe in the truth she is speaking now.

I also believe that Dolores remained silent for so long because she understood the cost her truth could have carried for Helen — her friend, her peer, her compañera in the struggle. She knew that speaking out while César was alive could have endangered Helen emotionally, socially, and even physically. Many men have never had to confront that kind of moral weight within themselves: the choice to protect another woman’s life, dignity, and safety at the expense of one’s own voice. Dolores carried that burden quietly, and her silence was an act of love as much as it was an act of survival.

Helen Chávez and Dolores Huerta were pivotal young leaders in the 1960s California farmworker movement. As co‑founders of what became the United Farm Workers, they stood at the heart of the struggle for labor rights — Helen providing the quiet, steadfast foundation that held the movement together, and Dolores leading strikes, negotiations, and national mobilizations. Their bond was not only political but deeply personal; they were part of the same family circle, sharing trust, sacrifice, and the intimate burdens of the movement.

That closeness matters now, as Dolores — at 96, facing her own mortality — chooses to speak truths that cleanse our histories rather than bury them. Her courage honors Helen’s legacy and reminds us that while I will always honor César for the heavy work he did for farmworkers and their families, I cannot and will not condone the harm that has now

🌟 ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE MOTHERSHIP 🌟
The Living Library is expanding — and GMA is leading the charge.
I am thrilled to share that our project now includes over 175 culturally competent vignette books designed to honor the whole self: identity, culture, lineage, emotional wisdom, community roots, and intergenerational leadership.
These books form the backbone of Project GMA, our storytelling initiative that uplifts families, celebrates heritage, and strengthens the next generation through narratives that reflect who we are and where we come from.
Each vignette is crafted to:
✨ Affirm identity across cultures
✨ Build emotional and cultural intelligence
✨ Strengthen family legacy and belonging
✨ Inspire youth through real stories and lived wisdom
✨ Connect our communities back to the Mothership — the source of memory, meaning, and collective power
This is more than a book collection.
It is a movement, a curriculum of the heart, and a gift to the future.
Stay tuned as we continue to release stories, resources, and opportunities for schools, libraries, and community partners to join us in uplifting culturally grounded, identity‑affirming literature.
The Mothership is humming.
GMA is calling us forward.
And the Living Library is growing — one powerful story at a time.
