SPARK Series Episode 4
Maurice “Chef Blāque” Shelton – Owner, Steel City Bakery

Success doesn’t always start with a straight path.

Chef Blāque’s journey began with rejection. After applying for a cake decorator role with no experience, he didn’t get the job. Instead, he started in the deli and worked his way up.

Today, he is a nationally recognized pastry chef, a winner on Netflix’s Sugar Rush, and the owner of Steel City Bakery in Gary, Indiana.

In this conversation, we explore how mindset, persistence, and personal vision can shape an entrepreneurial journey.

Key Lessons from Episode 4
• Turn setbacks into starting points. Not getting the job you want can be the beginning of something bigger.
• Lean into growth and uncertainty. Imposter syndrome and challenges are often signs that you’re leveling up.
• Build with purpose and intention. The most impactful businesses reflect the values of the people behind them.

Advice for Young Innovators
• Take risks early and explore your ideas
• Stay consistent, even when progress feels slow
• Believe in your vision before others do

Professors from multiple Purdue University locations, cross-disciplinary students and industry have all joined together with a singular focus: safer water. w/ Purdue Northwest

A new Purdue-developed technology drastically improves water quality, addressing contamination in both residential and industrial applications with an energy efficient, ambient temperature solution. Testing has shown that this technology can effectively destroy a variety of hazardous chemicals ranging from fuel additives to pharmaceuticals at scale. Recent results from two third-party testing laboratories have shown that this technology also destroyed “forever chemicals,” including PFAS, in samples from California test sites.

How do you foster a culture of and risk-taking within your organization?

"We build a culture around problem-solving, and by focusing on solutions, we've moved past the traditional concepts around risk. In other words, think big and act boldly." Bill Hanna, Dean & Barbara White Family Foundation.

What an honor and what a blast to accompany Ethan Hollins, founder of Ready Set Grow!, at the Garden Center Show. According to one company president he met, "You're going to be a millionaire someday." This 16-year old entrepreneur worked the floor with the poise and confidence of a seasoned professional. His company is going to be fun to watch... well, Grow!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to listen to Ethan's pitch, share ideas, and even discuss future partnership opportunities.

We had a great visit with BraunAbility yesterday at their campus in Winamac, IN. Thanks again to their Director of Consumer Marketing Charley Eltringham for hosting us!

If you're not familiar with BraunAbility, you should be! For over 50 years, they've led the mobile industry with built-to-trust wheelchair accessible vehicles, wheelchair lifts, seating solutions, and more.

When Ralph Braun built the first-ever wheelchair accessible vehicle over 50 years ago, he thought he was engineering his own mobility solution. What he actually invented was an entire industry that would forever change inclusion for people with mobility challenges.

BraunAbility is one of Northwest Indiana's greatest and success stories!

One interesting conversation we had with Charley during our visit is that BraunAbility is one of the only companies we can think of that purchases brand new products (in this case, vehicles) and intentionally tears them apart to rebuild new custom products.
