Our CU Society interns are next-generation leaders bringing CU Society to life across the country. Our next CU Society West Virginia intern feature is London Donahoe. London is a Huntington native and a senior at Huntington High School. He joined CU Society as an intern after graduating from CU’s Spring 2026 Civic Innovators Fellowship.

ā€œThe work CU Society is leading in West Virginia has brought people together unlike anything I’ve seen in my community: older and younger generations, business owners, elected officials from both sides of the aisle, native West Virginians, and those who have chosen to move to our state and now call it home. They all see the work we’re doing and are eager to get involved and connect with their neighbors. When we’re discussing local issues and the future of our city and state, the small differences among us feel much smaller, and I think that is incredibly inspiring.ā€

Our CU Society Interns want to make things work and don't wait to be asked to act. They're persistent, creative, and stewards of the futures of their communities. The next West Virginia CU Society Intern we’re featuring is Isabella Herrera, a Shepherdstown-born West Virginian. Isabella was a Fellow in CU’s Spring 2026 Civic Innovators Fellowship, and she's a senior at Jefferson High School.

ā€œMy favorite part of working with CU Society in West Virginia is the connection that comes with it. Today, personal connections in our communities, like to our local business owners, nurses, teachers, professors, social workers, customer service workers, caregivers, and more, are extremely important for building the futures we hope to see in our communities. As an intern, I’ve been able to bring in my understanding of the different dynamics of my community, which plays an important role in strengthening it. Connecting neighbors, especially during a time when it can be hard to come together, has been very rewarding.ā€

Happy National Intern Day! Today, we’re kicking off a series of posts highlighting and celebrating the CU Society interns and next generation leaders who make CU Society a reality.

First up is Rylin Russell! Rylin lives in Wheeling, WV and is a junior at American University. She is interning with CU Society for the summer!

Rylin shares, ā€œMy favorite part of the work CU is doing in WV is how expansive it is! I think that West Virginia is a historically overlooked area, especially when it comes to how the every-day West Virginian is involved with new industries and technologies, so the fact that there is any data being collected or outreach being done is a step in the right direction. What makes this work so amazing, in my opinion, is that the nature of civics and community engagement is a welcoming one, and that is why CU is putting together events and experiences that attempt to cater to as many people as possible. The effort to reach as many different people and, by extension, as many different stories, experiences, and opinions, as possible is by far my favorite part of the CU Society work happening in WV.ā€

This week, we hosted our first free workshop in partnership with Edgington Studio!

Attendees learned two hem stitches and heard from owner of Edgington Studio, Emily Rouse, about in-person learning, social connection, and community.

At CU Society, we know one of the biggest challenges we're facing today is how hard it is to come together in-person. We're excited to be bringing in-person community programs like workshops, dinners, and competitions to West Virginia to create more spaces for neighbors to listen, learn, and do together.

This week, CU Society hosted events in three WV cities:

šŸ“Cameron
šŸ“Huntington
šŸ“Wheeling

…all hometowns of our CU Society Interns!

On Tuesday in Huntington, CU Society convened small business owners, entrepreneurs, and local leaders in Huntington for a dinner conversation about tech, AI and the future of business.

We discussed how tech and AI have already impacted businesses locally, the new innovations can be leveraged to propel Huntington-area businesses forward, and the role each of us play when it comes to making technology work for small businesses.

We’re grateful to the community and business leaders who joined us at Sip Downtown Brasserie!

Very special thanks also to one of our stellar CU Society interns, London Donahoe, for leading the planning of this event. We’re grateful to our interns all around the state for their hard work convening their communities in-person!
