Inside-OUT:incarceration Incarcerated Artist in WV - Curation Team of formerly incarcerated Artist - Community Education Leonard Cohen once said, “There is a crack in everything.

The “Inside--->OUT : incARceraTion” installation is a collaborative arts project between incarcerated Artists in the WV Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Uplift WV curation team and the REACH Initiative’s community training, exploring the intersections between trauma, addiction, incarceration and reentry. The “Inside--->OUT” installation was developed to create community conversation

s, collaborative creativity and resilience around issues of incarceration, recovery and reentry in West Virginia. That is how the light gets in.”
“Inside--->OUT:IncARceraTion” explores the humanity of incarcerated individuals and meaningfully considers the reality of their journeys to become whole and healthy individuals, using their abilities to put good into the world, even while being excluded from it. The work considers how trauma, addiction and incarceration can all be forms of imprisonment. The works hold in tension the realities of the incarcerated artist's self-reflection of childhood trauma, subsequent consequences and rehabilitation amid exclusion. At the same time, space is created for the community to consider what successful reentry and community restoration might look like and how "the light" can seep in to help heal what has been broken. In West Virginia, 1 out of 10 children have an incarcerated parent. The WV Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation held 41,575 inmates and released 38,767 back into our community in 2021. There isn’t a community in West Virginia that isn’t impacted by incarceration and its too frequent connection to addiction. Inside--->OUT: IncARceraTion leans into a model of restorative justice that employs creating the ability for currently incarcerated artists to utilize their skills to heal themselves and their community through their artwork. UPLIFT WV, a group made up of individuals formerly incarcerated and/or in recovery, curate, hang and act as docents at the exhibits. Their input is invaluable in providing insight to the materials and techniques used by incarcerated artists, while their leadership in the project has gained them social equity in their communities in addressing reentry. The REACH Initiative provides coordinating educational training opportunities in conjunction with the exhibit. These trainings strengthen communities with the skills needed to support justice impacted individuals and families in successful reentry and futures, while lessening recidivism. The exhibit is currently on tour in West Virginia engaging communities in conversations and education regarding reentry, recovery and community resilience.

That’s a wrap! We de-installed at Concord University in Athens,WV and now we head to Huntington! Stand by for details!
Note: Our Uplift WV Curation Team does a fantastic job making each exhibit fit the space so well that it is easy to enjoy. However, installation and de-installation takes LOTS of work!
Hours of packing/ unpacking, hauling, and sweating! The team is lead by those with lived experience in reentry and recovery who are willing to put in this work because they know how much it matters. They deeply understand that reentry reform is only possible if communities come together to work together and they are willing to do some heavy lifting to making it happen!

Inside-OUT: incARceraTion was invited to do a pop-up installation in New York City at the DCTV Firehouse Theater during a documentary screening of “The First Step”. The film highlighted the similarities between West Virginia’s opioid crisis and LA’s crack crisis, and how those politically divided came together to fight for bipartisan prison reform legislation called “ The First Step.”
After the film, along with an invitation to “hear” from WV incarcerated Artist through their artwork, a panel discussion to include a former inmate, his former warden, the former WV Commissioner of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and former WV Assistant United States Attorney, and a WV professor of Criminal Justice from Fairmont State and others engaged in a meaningful discussion on ways to continue to work together to reimagine incarceration and reentry.
Ironically, the theater is across from
a notorious New York jail known as “ The Tombs.”

Inside-—>OUT:incARceraTion is on exhibit at Concord University in Athens, WV until March 2, 2023.
This is our 6th installation and the farthest south we have traveled so far! Besides for wonderful southern West Virginia hospitality, the exhibit has provided space for deep and reflective conversations about what a community response to incarceration and reentry might look like if we work together !
