The Work Session scheduled for Sunday, Sept 20 is canceled due to thunderstorms.

Our next Work Session will be Sunday, Sept. 27, 9 am to 11 am, followed by refreshments. Content of work includes w**ding and suckering, and perhaps a little mulching. With the wet summer, we have not needed to water so far, and w**ds have grown quickly. A few trees have multiflora rose growing near their trunks. This is a particularly challenging invasive to remove.

The Work Session scheduled for Saturday, July 18, is cancelled. The main work to be done was watering the young trees, and the forecast calls for 1-2" of rain that day, with possible thunderstorms. If it doesn't rain, the smoky air will be unhealthy for outdoor work, and if it does rain, we don't need to water that day.

Many thanks to the 7 volunteers who enjoyed a cool, humid (but not rainy) morning tending cherry trees in North Park last Sunday! For those who could get up early enough, the 8 am start time made summer tree care comfortable. We w**ded and mulched the Kwanzan and Sargent groves on the slope behind the Latrobe Shelter and the weeping cherries by the lake. Our next Work Session will be Sat. morning, 7/18, and will likely include watering.

Our next Work Session in North Park is Sunday, June 28, from 8 am to 11 am, followed by a light lunch. We are currently recruiting volunteers for this work session via our website, https://sites.google.com/view/pghsakuraproject-english/home. Follow the link to learn how to volunteer and please register via our Google Form (write in the date of the work session if it is not already a choice).
Please note that we are starting work early in case of heat, and are working on Sunday to avoid Saturday event road closures. Content of work includes some w**ding and suckering, mulching, checking the TreeDiapers, and replacing several deer fences, and likely watering, depending on recent rainfall.

Previous Work Session
Big thanks to the 16 people who came to North Park on Saturday, May 30, to w**d, mulch, and install 24 TreeDiapers to help the trees survive dry spells! We worked hard, from 10 am to around 12:30, and then relaxed over a light lunch. The weather was beautiful and quite comfortable.

Thanks to Mark Palmer for this lovely photo of Autumnalis cherry blossoms taken near Harmony Shelter and the pond on Friday, 4/3/2026. Besides its beauty, it epitomizes this year's cherry blossom season: leaves, buds, and flowers at the same time. You have to look closely to find the beauty in the combination. You also need good timing!
