🎗️ September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 💛

This month, we’re doing something a little different.

We will still be sharing facts about childhood cancer, but we also want to introduce you to the reason those facts matter: our Power Kids.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing the stories of several incredible children and families in our JIPK community—the diagnoses they never expected, the treatments they’ve endured, the milestones they’ve fought for, and the ways childhood cancer has changed their lives.

Because childhood cancer is more than a statistic.

It’s a child missing school for chemotherapy.
It’s siblings spending days apart.
It’s parents learning medical terminology they never wanted to know.
It’s surgeries, scans, hospital stays, side effects, fear, hope, grief, and celebration.

Behind every gold ribbon is a child with a name, a family, and a story worth knowing. 💛

Power Kid families, we’d love to see your kiddos today in the comments! Drop a photo of your Power Kid and tell us their name, diagnosis, and how old they were when they were diagnosed. 🎗️

Whether they’re in treatment, celebrating survivorship, or forever loved and remembered, every Power Kid’s story matters.

Let’s fill these comments with the faces behind the gold ribbon. 💛🎗️

For families facing childhood cancer, back to school can look pretty different. 🎒💛

For some, it’s a brand-new backpack, a new classroom, and first-day pictures.

For others, it’s returning to school after months away, learning from home or a hospital room, balancing treatments and appointments with schoolwork, or watching classmates head back while their own first day has to wait.

Some are in treatment. Some are celebrating the return to “normal.” Some are navigating the lasting effects of treatment. And some families are carrying precious memories of a child who should be heading back to school, too. 💛

No matter what back to school looks like for your family this year, we’re holding space for all of it — and cheering on every one of our Power Kids. ☀️📚

🎉GRAND FINALE of Maryland Trek 13!!!

⛰️➡️🌊Over the past 7 days, our team has hiked and biked across the state of Maryland. We started last Sunday at the summit of WISP and ended today at the shore of Ocean City.

LOOK AT ALL THESE FAMILIES at the finish line!! Day 7 Power Kid Lydia and her family walked with us to the shore. We were also joined by honorees past and present. A beautiful example of the community of support we’ve built over the years.

We trekked this year in honor of Gabriel, Kayden, Lincoln, Maverick, Madi, Oakley, and Lydia.

And in memory of James, Emmalyn, Leanna, Sofia, and Ariella. We will never forget them. 🙏💛

I’m sorry for not reporting much on the weather, but these kids and their families are super important to me. They matter so much more.

We have officially HIT OUR GOAL!! As of this moment, we are at $226,551 raised for Just In Power Kids!! A NEW RECORD for the Maryland Trek!! There’s still time to donate for our families.

🙏💛THANK YOU for your support! It means the world.

💛 I have a BIG announcement that I've been waiting to share with you.

At the finish of Maryland Trek 13, Big Tree Memorial Fund pushed our total OVER THE TOP with an incredibly generous donation!

🙏 I always say good people find good people, and this is the best example of it.

Big Tree had funding set aside specifically to help families in the Frederick area. They put out a call on social media, and someone in our network of families tagged Trek teammate Jerry Schlichting.

Because of the network Just In Power Kids has built over the years, our Program Director Bethany was able to immediately find Frederick families and connect them to support.

With their permission, I’d like to share two of the children and families we were able to help.

⚽ Holly, an identical twin who loves soccer, basketball, and her summer swim league. Diagnosed with leukemia in 2021, she relapsed in 2023 and keeps showing up with a smile through it all.

🎨 Hannah, a 12-year-old fighter and incredible artist. Diagnosed with Stage IV alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma at just 6 years old, she has been through more than most of us can imagine, and still shines.

🫶 And here is the part WE LOVE THE MOST. These two families know each other, and when we reached out, each one wanted to make sure the OTHER family was taken care of too.

THIS is the power of connection.
THIS is the power of community.
THIS is why your support matters. Even a like or a comment can go further than you’d ever imagine. 💛

THANK YOU, Big Tree Memorial Fund!
Big Tree Memorial Fund is a nonprofit focused on easing the challenges families face as a result of cancer. Through financial assistance and entry into a powerful network, Maryland-based BTMF hosts events and awards grants to honor the legacy of Erik "Big Tree" Knapp, who was lost suddenly to glioblastoma brain cancer, leaving behind his wife and their 4-month-old daughter.

Something special just happened…💛

We made a stop at Whataday CAFE, where the team gathered for a team photo. Jackie is friends with owners Tony & Kalpesh and got them on board as sponsors this year.

If you’re from the Eldersburg area, you probably already know Whataday cafe. They’re known for bringing people together, especially in the local running and cycling community.

At the stop, we realized we were just $500 shy of surpassing last year’s fundraising total. Kalpesh immediately pulled out his phone and made a $500 donation on the spot.

And just like that… we broke an ALL-TIME MARYLAND TREK fundraising record!! 🎉🎉

Tony & Kalpesh told us they were honored to be part of such a powerful event that supports families facing childhood cancer.

We are now at $171,498 toward our $200,000 goal.

The only thing left to say is…
WHAT A DAY. 💛

Good morning it’s Saturday, August 8. This is the FINAL DAY of Maryland Trek 13!!! Show our team some LOVE!

Today is for Lydia.💛🌊
An 8-year-old fighting leukemia with a fierce spirit and amazing sense of humor.

❤️‍🩹 Lydia has been hospitalized more than ten times this past year, and at her lowest point, she couldn't speak for two weeks. Her first words when she finally could? A joke, to make her mom laugh.

⛰️🔜 🌊This afternoon, we finish our 7-day, 329-mile trek in Ocean City and walk the final steps to the ocean. Lydia, her family, and so many of our Power Kids will be waiting for us.

We finish Maryland Trek 13 the way we started it: for them.

🙏💛 We are LESS THAN $5,000 away from our goal of $200,000. PLEASE help my team get there by the finish line this afternoon. 🔗Fundraiser link in comments.

“I am forever grateful for Just In Power Kids.”

Don’t take it from us, hear it from our families.

PLEASE take a minute to watch the stories from yesterday’s Kids Trek Too.

This is why we trek.
This is why we raise money.
These are our families.
We support them, they support us.

We are LESS THAN $10,000 away from our goal for these families. Help us get there by the finish line tomorrow in Ocean City. 🌊

I’ve added the link to our Facebook portion of our fundraiser in the comments. ⬇️

Yesterday was Bereaved Mother’s Day.

A day that holds so much love… and so much loss.

Today, and every day, we’re still holding space for the mothers who have had to say goodbye to their children.

The ones who carry them in their hearts every single day.

You are seen.
You are not forgotten.

We honor you yesterday, today, and always 💛
