From impactful fundraisers and employee support initiatives to unforgettable events and growing partnerships, AAHSEA continues to create meaningful opportunities that bring people together and give back. As outlined in our foundation, we exist to cultivate connection, boost morale, and provide social, wellness, and charitable opportunities for our community .

Please join us in celebrating Mr. James Mendryga, recipient of the March 2026 Employee of the Month Award! James' many years of dedicated service have made an incredible impact on our facility and the Veterans we serve. Through consistent professionalism, a strong work ethic, and active involvement in the dietetic internship program he continues to demonstrate a commitment to growth and excellence.

“James Mendryga, a Cook in the Nutrition & Food Service, is an extremely deserving recipient of the March 2026 Employee of the Month award for the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. He exemplifies all the VA’s ICARE values, especially Integrity & Commitment, through his reliability as a preceptor, active involvement on the Dietetic Internship Committee, and unwavering dedication to serving Veterans with high-quality meals and experiences. For more than 15 years, he has put his heart into the food he creates, and in recent years he has also become a cornerstone of the new dietetic internship, leading interns through all areas of the kitchen, teaching critical skills like recipe development, sanitation, quality assurance, and making interns feel welcome and comfortable in a busy environment. His leadership was especially evident in the successful intern-led Theme Meals, including the November 2025 lunch featuring a chicken provolone sandwich, maple-glazed Brussels sprouts, and butternut squash soup, which went off without a hitch thanks to his guidance, taste testing, and focus on Veterans’ satisfaction. By keeping Veterans at the center of every decision and strengthening both patient care and intern training, he truly embodies what it means to live the ICARE values each day. Congratulations on receiving this award, James, and thank you for the years of dedication and excellence you’ve given to our staff and Veterans!”

Ben's unwavering hard work, dedication, and exceptional leadership have truly made a significant impact on our facility. Ben embodies the spirit of collaboration, always going above and beyond to support colleagues and drive success.

"Benjamin Brown, Locksmith in Facilities Management Service, is a truly deserving recipient of the February 2026 Employee of the Month award. He exemplifies the VA’s ICARE values -especially Commitment and Excellence - through his leadership of the full re-key and re-core project of the main campus over the past 35 months. This was a once-in-a-generation effort involving nearly 3,000 lock cores, 4,600 keys, and countless hours of planning and physical work, all completed flawlessly while he assisted in maintaining regular Lock & Key Shop services. Acting as a subject matter expert, Ben guided leadership decisions through detailed market research, led his teammates with humility and teamwork, and implemented a new patented key system that reduced issued keys from approximately 8,000 to 4,600, significantly improving security and safety for every employee, patient, and visitor. His quiet front-line leadership, habit of giving credit to others, and unwavering dedication to the mission make Benjamin Brown an outstanding example of service to our Veterans and our healthcare system.
