Recently, Tufts Medical Center announced a major shift in its services. The closing of trauma unit seems like an insurmountable challenge, but your KFNE Board of Directors, working closely with Dr. Walter Chwals and their Board, have come up with a plan. This is a good plan, and one that recognizes the many years of partnership we have enjoyed with the hospital and its very talented pediatric surgeons.
Even though Tufts will no longer have its pediatric trauma unit, they will continue to have their Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit. They will continue to serve the youngest of patients who require intensive care. Older kids who need services will be referred to Boston Children's Hospital.
Tufts will continue to offer ALL SERVICES utilized by Kiwanis Clubs for the KPTI program. Bike Safety Rodeo support, Key Clubby Bears, Car Seat Stickers, Early Childhood Injury Prevention kits (including temperature sensitive Ducks and outlet plugs), and all the programs they have supported for years. NOTHING CHANGES
Your board sees this as a transition period.
Over the next year, we will carefully monitor their performance and continue to urge clubs to take advantage of the KPTI programs. We will also consider alternatives and will welcome input from members across the district.
The Red Jacket Program,. which is the primary source of funding for the services that clubs utilize through KPTI will continue. Any donations will still go to our endowment to fund all the childhood trauma programs that we always funded.
One important aspect of KPTI has always been research projects, and the good news is that research will continue by Tufts. We will monitor this for other fundable projects in future years.
We appreciate your continued donations to our Red Jacket and Crest Upgrade programs. This funding will continue to support much of what we have enjoyed since the inception of KPTI, and will offer time to make a well-thought solution if the success of the past are not fulfilled.
