It's time to install the wayside for Utah's newest trail the Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Trail at historic Fort Douglas.

WHAT is a "wayside"? It is a sign with explanation about the historic significance of a spot or area. In this case relative to Utah's Black history, Fort Douglas is one of the sites where Buffalo Soldiers were stationed as well as where they worked. The 24th Infantry of the United States Colored Troops (aka the Buffalo Soldiers) were stationed there, arriving in October 1896, 130 years ago this year.

Join us for this celebratory event. See attached for information.

This photo is from an August 1942 gathering at the Black American USO here in Utah. The year being 1942, that means this was during World War II and these are Army soldiers because the Air Force was not established until 1948.

Since Black American military were not allowed in the USO, the Black American Community of Salt Lake City and Ogden created one just for them. It may not have been as fancy as the "real" USO. A warehouse or the hall of a Black-centric church provided Utah's Black American military with a gathering place. Afterall, we know the young men didn't care what the place didn't have; they came for what it DID have:
*association with their Black American Community
*the great soul food they missed

One of the highlights of membership in Utah Tour Guide Association (UTGA) is that we get to go on tours.

This week UTGA President Kevin arranged for us to tour the newly-opened Salt Lake Art Museum inside the preserved historic and beautiful B'nai Israel Temple. THANK YOU, KEVIN!

We stepped inside a room decorated to feel like we were in the home of Utah artist Pilar Pobil, complete with painted furnishings from the artist's home. We also took a photo in front of the awe-inspiring and as-of-yet unknown background of the painted glass window. Talk about stories to tell and waiting to be told! We highly encourage a visit to Utah's newest art museum, dedicated solely to exhibit Utah's own artists.

Shout-out to Museum Director Chris Jensen, who was our tour tour guide and is filled with a wealth of knowledge on the pieces and artists. He also has quite the box inside him of stories! We enjoyed all the ones he shared with us.
