PASTOR’S CORNER
I don’t post on Facebook much but I have decided I’m going to start posting on our church page from time to time as I feel inspired to do so.
First off I want to thank my beautiful wife, Tabetha for all these wonderful posts she has made over the last year. To put in the time to inspire the faith of so many that view our website every day is encouraging and a true blessing. Thank you, my lovely bride!
Today I was thinking about all the chores that are constantly surrounding me.
Fix the vehicle, fix the farm equipment, I have 10 things I have to get done at my full-time job, oh by the way, don’t forget to call the insurance agent, mow the grass, write a sermon, don’t forget to send this card, we need some groceries, the car needs an oil change, three special events this week, two at my job, one at the church. The list never stops. All stuff I love or don’t mind doing too much, but sometimes the list can be overwhelming.
I’m not just talking about me here, I’m just using myself as an example, because many of you are just this busy yourselves. In my 25 years of pastoring congregations I have often found that most retirees are busier than their children and grandchildren.
Sometimes you start feeling like you are not allowed to take a break because something won’t get done. That you have to keep moving on and working and doing.
You start to ask, “Lord, why didn’t you make a day 30 hours long?” But if it were 30 hours long, we would do the same thing. We would just cram more stuff into our already too busy lives.
I think that’s how Martha felt in the Bible when she was waiting on Jesus and the disciples and she was mad at her sister for just spending time at Jesus feet.
But here’s the truth of the matter. Jesus says not to be anxious about tomorrow. In fact, he said there’s enough troubles to worry about today. He also tells us to be anxious about nothing and not to worry about our lives. He said the birds of the air are fed by the heavenly father. He says that God clothes the grass of the field. So why wouldn’t your father in heaven be taking care of you as well?
Throughout scripture he reminds us that he is the true peace-giver, that he has overcome the world, and that he will be the friend that sticks closer than a brother. He’s got everything under control… So why do we worry?
We don’t need to worry about our to-do list. We just have to give everything to God trusting that he’ll help us get it all done when it needs to be done or that he will send others to help.
Sometimes I have found that the things I did not get done were of no real impact, and I was fretting for nothing.
Today I implore you to give all your stress and anxieties to the Lord. Pray about them. Do the ones you can. Then have some time to rest.
Here’s a final question to get you thinking.
What if we were as concerned about making sure we got in our prayer time, Bible reading, and worship of the Lord as we were getting our to-do list done? What if we put him first and then put all of our stress and chores second? Maybe things wouldn’t seem so stressful and we would have a different outcome.
